So today after a ride out on my bike I got chatting to a friend who is doing a 100mile ride at the end of August and for some reason I agreed to do it with him. Now training wise does anyone have any tips & where do I start? Ive only just got back on my bike after about 13yrs off, had the bike just over 3weeks, been out about 8 times and the longest ride Ive been on was today, 16.5miles. I felt I could have gone on a lot longer today but I dont know the area where I live very well yet and ended up on a shorter route than intended. All tips & advice are greatly appreciated.

www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/events/training/cycling/beginners-training-schedule.aspxWork your way through this, scroll down to intermediate and advanced - unless you're young and already fit, best think 2 to 3 year game plan for meaningful endurance riding (not just a 1 off flatland 100, I mean ride anywhere, including mountains) - you can get there quicker for a 1 off event but it's more realistic to take your time. Also less risk of injury, amazing for overall health and more fun. Should be able to do it without too much trouble if you're trained well, it's tiring for anyone though, even the pros.

Thanks a lot for this, Ill have a good look through see what I can pull from it. Im going to try and get out again this evening for a short ish blast as im going to have a mess with my riding position etc as still not 100% happy. Then tomorrow im going to plan a 25-30mile ride and see if I can get someone out with me which should help. Fitness wise id say im average &think could plod through at my own pace up to about 30miles and feel ok so hopefully the 50mark will not be to far off. Then hammer it for the 100. Thats my logic so far anyway! Haha.

If you can do 16 miles then you can do 30 without too much hassle. 30 to 50 is another manageable step up. Above 70 it starts to get hard then it's survival mode from 85 miles to home. With a hundred miler don't be worrying about average speed a etc, just focus on the miles. Use any descents to conserve energy.
I would definitely recommend fitting a few fifty's in and maybe one ride above 70 in the run up to the big ride. The hundred will hurt on the day but it's meant to hurt.

What Gerard said above , ive been doing 50 milers every weekend and 20 or 30 miles 1-2 times a week before doing a 115 mile ride, build it up, if you can do 50 then a ton is no problem, dont panic, i was nervous about doing it but got there easy with no pain or tiredness, its not a race so take it easy, take plenty of fluids and some energy food and you will be fine, this coming from a 48 yr old who smoked for 36 yrs

Thanks everyone Ill keep you posted with my progress. I think the hardest part is going to be getting out as much as I want as I start a different job monday so the hours im working may be a pain for getting out but im sure ill find a way. Speed wise im not really concerned about as I dont have a cycle computer to worry about it, im king of the plod! Will have a good read up on food and drinks at some point, I can't warrent them at the moment with the distance or lack of that ive been doing.

When's the next one then baz? Next Saturday, a few of us are going round lough neagh, its only 80 mile or so but i'll make it up to 100 coming and going from meet point, having a presentation of the funds raised for the cystic fibrosis ride from Belfast to Donegal (115 miles) that night then a few beers , not sure how much was raised but it was a couple of grand, will try and get some pics of presentation and final total the week after.

First update. Sunday I managed to get out in the evening for what I wanted to be at least 25miles but ended up only being 23 miles as again I took a wrong turn which shortened my route. Oh and had my second off due to me forgetting id adjuted my seat height again so did the comedy fall routine again. I felt tired before setting out and was hungry which probably wasnt the best idea but still enjoyed it. Monday I had a rest and today I did a short 10mile route in my dinner hour to loosen up my legs as they were feeling a bit heavy. Rest of the week im planning on going on the spinning bike at work tomorrow for an hour, thurs will see if I can fit in a 20mile ride, fri & sat rest then sunday a 35 which follows the route ive done a few time so I shouldnt be that far off. Also considering doing the Manchester Blackpool next month as a warm up for the 100 in August. How long has it take for any of you to ride 100 miles? As it stands its probably going to take me a week!

Just do as much as you can Al, it all counts, always eat about an hour before you ride , some may differ but thats what i do, your only starting out so ride every other day, you will get "off" days were you feel like Sh*tΒ£ , don't let that put you off, you will get stronger, build it up slowly , id say leave 2 rest days before your 100 mile ride day, that way you'll be itching to get at it and your legs will be a bit more springy. Took me 8 hours to do 115 mile with a few stops inbetween, remember its not a race, conserve energy, hydrate and get some energy food in you, you will be fine.

Bristol to London was 117 miles and took me 7hr 9mins moving time and about 7:45 total time last August and I started cycling in the November before that and got triban 3 and started properly in jan. However the route is about as easy as a century can be with very few hills at all. However times are bit irrelevant for centuries especially the first one. Just take it easy, plenty of food and fluids and freewheel down every hill!

Did my first 100 mile ride at the weekend, and it was great! I took it easy over the first 3 big hills, then still feeling good the flat section seemed real easy, and although i was slow up the last climb, it wasn't bad. www.strava.com/activities/157242922 - My normal rides are about 50 miles, so was a bit worried that I would not last. I read somewhere (cant remember where I am afraid) that you can double your normal distance without too much discomfort - and it proved true. so - if you can ride 50 miles comfortably, you can do 100 over similar terrain without too much hurt. Since you do not know your area well, you have a great chance to discover it. strava route planner is great, coz it gives you a route profile. to avoid getting lost on new roads i write directions on a bit of paper and tape it to my water bottle. things i learnt: - ride as much as you can before the event - dont really worry about training - you aint going for a time, just get your legs used to the work, and get some regular 50 mile + rides in
- you dont need fancy gels - fruit pastels and oaty bars worked good for me and taste better. i made my own rehydration sachets (lo-salt and sugar)
- you are never too far from a shop/garage to restock on sweeties/water.
- do not stop for too long. i find after 15 min stop my legs start to stiffen. - similarly i pedal on descents (against what other folks have said i know) - not hard, pushing for speed, just to keep muscles moving.
- keep a steady pace - avoid sprints
- its great fun and is over too soon.
This aint gospel, its my personal experience. pinch of (rehydration)salt etc...
hope it goes well for you. keep us posted with how your training is going. =D

As it stands its probably going to take me a week! I did my first 100 miler last week www.strava.com/activities/154753841It was 7 hrs 20 moving time but I had about an hour and a quarter rest taken over six rest stops. I'm 50 yrs old and 17 stone (was 20) and have been road cycling for 6 months (mtb for a year or so before the triban), I've worked up from 20 mile rides to the ton last week. Due to work/family commitments I only get out on the bike once a week if I'm lucky these days so just went for it as I was still feeling fresh 40 miles out from home on that day. I find hydration and nutrition is the key, if I don't keep on top of it I cramp up or just run out of steam. I personally use gels/energy bars/energy drinks to keep me going because of the remote places I ride. Garages and shops are few and far between up here so sachets of powdered energy drinks and gels are perfect for me because I can fit a days worth in my pockets. That's just what's been good for me, just keep at it go a little bit further every ride and you will soon get there. Good luck and keep at it
