Got good advice on here previously about extending battery life. download app called battery doctor from cheetah mobile - has doubled amount of time my phone records strava, especially with the turn down cpu when screen is off option. oh - and i bought a backup battery too - only a few quid. well done racking up the miles.Β I got this app along with a cleaner app from the same people which seems to be alright and got rid of loads of stuff off my phone. It will have its first real test tomorrow when im in work all day. It dosent really help im due a new phone and I was using my wireless blue tooth head phones as well. I will be taking my ipod for music and phone for tracking now I think to see if that helps. &Thanks for pointing it out to me.

Just done a 100 miler and I've got 56% battery life left after recording to Strava. I put it in Airplane mode and used Battery Doctor to close any apps I wasn't using. My phone is a Nexus 5.

If we could just link your bike up to trickle feed into the national grid I'm sure they could close a power station down somewhere

You'll find riding in a group makes it a lot easier than going out solo too. I did my first sportive yesterday. It was 60 miles - twice the furthest distance I'd ridden previously. I was riding with a mate and was surprised at how much easier it is in a bunch. Good luck. I have to say I am slightly apprehensive of the prospect of riding with a lot of other people, as to date ive only been out once with one other person at the same time. Although it did help a lot just having someone to chat to and take my mind off things&know someone else was going through the same pains. I was too but you can always talk to people while you ride and ask them for advice on etiquette etc. Riding in the group makes it easier physically too as the wind resistance is reduced (except when you are taking a turn at the front).

It does help having others to ride with and share the pain. Feeling pretty good now about the Manchester Blackpool ride on sunday after a good couple of short rides the past couple of days. Pretty amazed the difference in 2months!

The Manchester to Blackpool ride seems to attract riders of all abilities. My mum does very little cycling and dragged her bike out along with her work colleagues one year to give it a bash. She was far from being fit. She did it okay but she felt it for a few days afterwards.
I'm sure you will be fine.

So long as I finish it before the blokes on the uni cycle wearing the monkey suit im all good. Im doing it with one of my mates who I rode 60 odd miles with on Sat just gone so know its not going to be much of a problem. Im gonna to try some of the Hi5 drinks and gels out to see if they are any good. Ive seen a pack with loads of different gels in etc for about a tenner. Has anyone used any and know how long they take to work etc?

So the manchester blackpool bike ride was done & have to say im shattered. The last 8miles were hard work into a head wind&I feel worse now than I did last week when I rode 66miles. Food wise I need to make the effort to eat and drink a lot more often to keep me going to. I tried a few gels and drinks today that seemed to help a bit which was useful to see. Any tips food wise what to try other than maltloaf?

Bananas, sports mixtures, jelly babies etc. If you want to stop, maybe pop into a shop for a meal deal and buy some chicken and pasta salad or sandwiches and a can of coke. Mix up some electrolyte/energy powder with your water. (Holland and Barrett loopy juice works fine for me on long rides)
Passed a few thousand riders today between Blackpool and Preston. Headed back into that wind later on in the ride. Orrid..!!
Well done al999.

Porridge an hour before your cycle or banana and toast, on the way a gel or two or if you stop along the way a chicken/lettuce/side salad, sandwich/roll , easy peasy lionel squeezy

Well day 51 with my bike! So managed to find a free hour this afternoon after a busy week and decided to try get my 10 mile loop into the 30min zone rather than the 40. First off it was bloody warm today but smashed it, felt really good on the bike gears are a bit cluncky at times but needs a real good clead after last weekend manch blackpool run in the rain then the sand blasting to finish. Anyway managed my loop in 39mins which I was well impressed with and nearly threw up when I finished to celebrate! First commute to work on it tomorrow so will see how that goes

Well managed the ride to and from work today which was good, nice warm weather again for both rides. So the way home is 10.8 miles, I was feeling tired before I set off and the traffic slowed me down in a lot of places. I got home and checked how long it had taken and managed it in 38mins. I am amazed as I only pushed on the up hill parts. A lot more of the ride is up hill compaired to yesterday when I busted a gut to do the 10miles in 39mins and its my second ride of the day. I dont get how i managed it at all!

As its been a while and the 100 is on Sunday I thought it may as well give my last update before the ride itself. Sooooooo, a few stats to start off. I've had the bike for about 3 & a half months now and done the following according to Strava, although the first few rides i did i didn't have Strava and on a few my phones died before I've finished the rides but hey its a good approx. Distance 645.5 mi Total Time 45h 3m Elev Gain 17,454 ft Rides 31 All-Time Distance 645.5 mi Rides 31 Biggest Ride 76.4 mi Biggest Climb 600 ft Weight loss, just over 1 stone(through riding alone no change in diet). All in all i think after 13 years of not riding my attempt to get into this cycling lark is not to shabby, averaging about 20 miles per ride now when after my first 10 mile outing i thought i may die! Sunday I think I'm ready for it, I managed to get out with Rob from off here to do some of the course in some shocking weather so I know unless the bike dies on me Ill finish the 100 miles, how long it will take me though is any ones guess. As this was my aim and main motivation for cycling(signed up for it before I had a bike). I've been thinking of other things to keep me going and to aim for & if any one else has any ideas or anything good to do then let me know, it will be much appreciated. 1- A turbo trainer for the winter in the garage. Mainly so times like now I could at least do a bit rather than having to wait or not being able to due to the bambino and me and the mrs working etc. 2- New bike. The Alur 700 was what I originally wanted and still do, but timing wise now I may be better off getting something that will shortly be reduced up to about the 1k mark. 3- Another set of wheels for the bike, something cheap like the 501's. Would have a spare wheel set up to leave on the turbo trainer to save messing about then. 4- A coast to coast (or 2), going to start looking into these soon. 5- Duathlon - Gives me something to aim for & to get back trying to do some running again with the long term goal of a triathlon (i can dream) 6 - TT - again something to aim for and keep motivated. 7- Join a local club. To help motivation and get used to riding more with others. 8- Hills - Need to do more for fitness and work on getting off the saddle more. 9- Weight & Fitness - Ultimately if all else fails if i just improve these two more then I'll be happy.
