I started smoking in my early twenties (20 years ago) at university. Went through two periods of stopping, the longest being four and half years from 2003 to 2007. Stopped again for nine months when I trained for the 2011 London Marathon. This year I stopped from February to April and I'm now in a "generally not smoking" period again. However I will always be a smoker and am comfortable with that. I might stop with them from now until I'm an old man. I might start again today. I go by if I don't want to smoke I won't and if I REALLY want one then I'll go and buy some. I'm going to West Ham on Saturday and I'm pretty sure I'll buy ten for the day. But I haven't smoked at home or at work for a few months now and I don't have the urge to. Besides, I'm cycling, swimming and gymming a lot at the moment and I really feel the fags when doing so. Funnily enough I had my annual NHS health check last week. When asked about smoking I said about twenty a month (two nights out). The nurse said that although the NHS couldn't possibly say such things officially or publicly, that fell into the advised "acceptable" range in their charts and graphs. And my lung capacity test came in at 110% - which I think means I'm an X-Factor contestant. When i was controlling my smoking i wasn't enjoying it...when i was enjoying it i wasn't controlling it. It took a near fatal heart attack to convince me it may be be a good idea to quit for good...the first year wasn't without it's problems but i knew from experience where the first one would lead...been stopped since 11/02/2008 two days before my daughters birthday she said it was the best gift she ever got...me too

I gave up about 3 years ago. Went cold turkey after smoking about 20-30 a day depending on how busy I was in the garage. Best thing I ever did.

It was the same for me robf, cold turkey not easy but in the long run it worked out ok. If that hadn't worked i would have tried anything. Today i don't believe there is any wrong way of giving up. Not being flipant but there are cheaper ways to shedding this mortal coil...

im easily led into the social smoking then end up starting again from there. ive stopped for 3 years and 2 year stints but too easy to start back on them. bad day or out on a motorbike tour where most other bikers in your group are pulling over every half hour to light up. tried the e gigs but they are rubbish and give me sore heads and shakes when trying to get to sleep

Regardless of what's going on around me, whither I have had a good or bad day, the first will lead to another and before long it's the same old merry-go-round. Difficult I know to predict the future but as a rule smoking goes hand in hand with bad health in later years. I lost both my parents from cancer and my own smoking was brought to an end thanks to a near fatal heart attack. It's what had to happen before I began searching for a way out, my road doesn't have to anyone else's. My desire to quit had to be found and for me that came from within. One of the best things I walked away from, I wasn't only denying my family a better future but also myself a better way of life. I honestly know today there is not one legitimate reason for me to start lighting up again, only excuses!

One of the best things I walked away from, I wasn't only denying my family a better future but also myself a better way of life. I honestly know today there is not one legitimate reason for me to start lighting up again, only excuses! That's why I recommended the Allen Carr book. It helps you focus on understanding what your body is telling you and helps you see clearly through the deception that addiction brings - The fact that 'excuses' are needed to light up. The fact that there is nothing to 'give up' and you either choose to smoke or don't. I used to be good at 'giving up' smoking, but I was much better at starting again! I used to smoke heavily. I don't now. I used to think I enjoyed it, but I know I feel much better now that I don't. I also smell better, am more even tempered, have more time and money and am able to do a lot more physically that I could before. Never say never, but I can't see me smoking again either.

I see you didn't enjoied them and I think you tried those really cheap ones...and it's wrong because a good electronic cigarette it's the best alternative of feeling the sensation of smoking a real cigarette without damaging your health, plus enjoying various kinds of flavours. I really want to recomand you these starter kits I've tried and helped me for so long. Check this out www.vape-compare.co.uk/electronic-cigarette-starter-kits/ . Smoke cheap and healthy!
