I'm fed up of spending a fortune on fags. I'm fed up of smelling like an old ashtray when I've smoked a fag. I'm fed up of the fact that fags are slowly killing me. I'm fed up of the negative impact on my health for all the years I've smoked.
With the above in mind I went out yesterday and bought myself an e-cig. The ones that you fill with liquid. Charged the battery last night ready to hopefully change my life starting today.
Had a round of golf this morning with a pal. Usually make a good hole in a packet of cigs on the golf course. Not today though. Used them all up last night and drove straight past the local shop this morning. Had a couple of pulls on the e-cig whenever I got the pangs and it helped enormously. Played 18 holes without a single cig.
Got home, showered, changed and had a light lunch. Danger time! Sure enough, the need for a cig arrived. Simply had a few draws on the e-cig and the crisis was averted. So far today I haven't smoked a single cigarette and I'm feeling pretty good about myself.
From a cycling perspective, giving up the cigs can only be a good thing. Personal health and fitness has GOT TO improve considering I won't be pumping all those noxious chemicals etc into my lungs with every drag. OK, I'm still getting the nicotine, but that is harmless in comparison. As time progresses I will be looking to reduce the strength of the dose of nicotine.
It's only the beginning of a long hard road but I'm gonna give it a proper go. Hopefully my new e-cig will help me along the way. Some may say "Why not just give up without the nicotine fix" Believe me, I've tried it before and failed a few times. Hopefully, just hopefully, this time it'll work.
STOPTOBER coming up soon. Would be nice to think that I gave up several days before the event began. Any other smokers planning on kicking the habit for Stoptober?

Every credit, Redleader. I gave up donkey's years ago and it has proved to be a lifechanger. Going public on it will help give you that extra incentive. I wish you well.

Yep, brave, members of my family are still trying to stop - I've been known to indulge myself in decades gone by, usually socially, or after a few too many, or when something rough happened.
New day tomorrow, one day at a time stuff - fitness will definitely improve; if it goes wrong one day, then so what (? - not saying this is the aim though) but do aim not to let it slip and change the long term game plan.

Good on you Big Brother, as a smoker myself giving up the fags is next on my list. The first two were to start exercising (Triban taking care of that!) and eat more healthily to id weight loss (going well so far!) Would be interested to hear which particular e-cig you got as I don't know anyone else using them so looking for recommendations.

Would be interested to hear which particular e-cig you got as I don't know anyone else using them so looking for recommendations. Bought the Tornado eGo-c from HEREWe have a shop in my home town. Simply walked through the door, got some great advice from the guy in there who suggested a starter kit. Cost me Β£35 which in cig terms is not a lot but I got everything I needed to start vaping. The flavours they have is unbelievable. Decided to go for tobacco to start with which the shop owner said was the popular choice for 1st time vapers. Did a bit of research beforehand and found a few sites who sell similar albeit cheaper online. At least I got face to face advice and a kit which serves my purpose. If you do go down the e-cig route RobP let me know how you get on with them. Best of luck mate!

I just went cold turkey and quit them back in February... Not had one since. It's not easy but stick at it and take each day as it comes. Best of luck

Nice one red good man, i'm on and off them all the time, usually the drink has me back on them but that's more of a cop out than a genuine reason. I find it easier to stop with the mints but everyone has their own way of doing it. Tried patches, inhaler and gum but they weren't for me. Amazing the amount of money you save, at work a tenner a day turns into a tenner a week!

Good choice Red, Cold Turkey for me was the way, i wanted everything outta the system in one go, not had a cig in near 8 months, first few weeks are hard but not impossible , infact it was a lot easier than i thought it was gonna be but thats just me, everyone is different, it will get easier as time goes on, now you'll be thinking about a smoke every 5 mins, in a few months it dwindles down to 2 or 3 times a day and is easy to brush away, best tips i can give is to stay busy , drink water when craving bad , suck on some mints (suger free) but most of all take it one day at a time, if your determined you will get there , Good Luck!!!

I started using an ecig from jacvapour about 14 months ago and not had a proper cig since. you get lots of different strengths of nicotine cartridges to help you and even ones that have zero nicotine but you still get the smoking feeling.

Cold turkey is the best way..with maybe a nicotine supplement to get you through the first week.
Get it out your system and deal with the symptoms. It can be tough but its a short sharp shock that gets the job done.
The last thing you want is to still be addicted to nicotine 6 months down the line using patches or ecigs or whatever. You still have to kick the nicotine which is the hardest bit.
Good luck.

All the best with this Red, having seen my Dad try and give up a few times I know it's not easy.

8th day and doing well.
Using the e-cig as and when needed. Finding it easier than I thought at work. Just a few drags in the morning, tend to use it more in the afternoon following lunch. Sitting here having a toot on it now, first one since my tea. Mrs Red has no objection to me vaping in the house as there is no stench or smoke associated with it. (Just vapour produced which disappears quickly) Never allowed to smoke in the house!
Feeling better already, commuting home faster than ever with a more rapid recovery time.
I am an athlete!!!
