Past TCR experience seems to be telling now, or did James Hayden just carry a spare pair of legs with him?

Not sure what happened to Bernhold since JH now seems to have the win in the bag.

Not sure what happened to Bernhold since JH now seems to have the win in the bag. I think he was having trouble keeping a high pace in the hot weather. All done by tea time for JH the looks of it now. Massively impressive.

JH won 8 days 23 hours and 14 minutes - est 3500+kms
Alas, some of the interesting characters mid table (eg Rishi Fox, Jonah Jones) have scratched after the heatwave and finding alternative ways to get to the finishing party.
I found last year that following the laterne rouge was intesresting after everyone else had finished. There is something about the people who come through adversity but still push on to the finish well after every one else has gone home.

In 2015 the laterne rouge finished in 34 days, 2016 27 days

It looks like the current Laterne Rouge is aiming to make the record of slowest finisher (if he actually finishes).
Chris Davies has done 814 kms so far in the 8days. Looked a little while ago, and the tracker hadn't moved for 2 days, now I see he is moving again.
According to someone on the TC FB group, he left his phone at home deliberately so as not to be distracted - I am not sure how he is navigating.
Last year he scratched whilst still in France, after having completed 950kms in 8 days.
So in reality he is unlikely to be the last finisher.

The new Laterne Rouge is the Mah brothers 257a/b since 102 Chris Davies has now scratched. 257a/b were on CP2 at the same time as 174, and someone else (cannot see cap number, could be previous years LR David Coulon). 174 Hector Nunez has a new lease on life and done 200km yesterday. Previously doing mainly about 160kms per day. 257a/b started off doing 180kms the first 3 days, and then settled on 100-155km per day. You can see their est daily distance by clicking on their names on the frrt website. eg frrt.org/tcrno5/r/257b-jeremy

Compare to James Hayden, the winner frrt.org/tcrno5/r/75-jamesRode est 600kms in the first 23 hours, with 2 short stops only. 7 hour break, then another 360kms in 14 hours. And he was no means the fastest in the first few days. Bjorn Lenhard frrt.org/tcrno5/r/26-bjornrode the first 24 hours straight, but after was riding 21 hours after 3 hour sleep each day.

I was worried in the first couple of days when I couldn't see James Hayden at the front as the other contenders were all there, but clearly he had his strategy perfected. He even bagged the Strava KoM for the climb to finish line control! Talk about finishing in style!!

Looks like the 3 of them are in touring mode together. Instagram post from yesterday with 252a&b also. Looking at routes, I have no idea where they are. Anyway they're having a good time and still riding. www.instagram.com/aedewan/

So now is the time when only the midpack riders and the 'serious' Laterne Rouge candidates are left.
David Coulon is a previous slowest finisher. At one stage in the weekend he did overtake Daragh Browne, but he has been overtaken again.
There looks to be about 17 riders currently in Greece, 9 in FYROM, 3 in Serbia, 6 in Bulgaria, 13 in Romania, and the previous 2 mentioned still in Hungary.
ETA at this moment 9 riders within 100km of the finish.

So now it looks clear that David Coulon is 'last' (but still worthy of respect for the est 3000kms+) Darragh Brown clear 2nd to last
Interesting is the grupetto of 5, over 200kms ahead of DB, and over 300km behind the next batch. They are currently strung out within 50kms of each other, but this morning 3 of them were obviously sleeping overnight in the same hotel, and a couple of days ago, again 3 of them were together descending from CP3 (not 100% there were the same 3).
These 5 seem like they're not the bivvying type, and hotelling their way around.
Currently: Hector Nunez: est 679km DTF Tina Nestoroska - 30 kms back Goran Arsovski - 3 kms Wiesia Kuczai - 14 kms Josie Jones - 3 kms
