Oh no! That is desperately sad news. Someone who clearly gave so much to a community of people who shared his passion or were mad enough to try.

1st rider has just reached CP2 - Monte Grappa, which according to the map is 1112km from the start. 2nd place about 50kms back, and then about 20kms back again 3rd and 4th placed riders are only couple of hundred meters apart (according to the dots).
Currently looks like a party at CP1 - Schloss Lichtenstien with about 40 dots in or around it (CP1 is 587 km from the start).
Otherwise 200 riders strewn in between cp1 and cp2.

#1 & #2 Bjorn Bernhard and James Hayden, were spotted by a dotwatcher at a roadside starbucks together (pic is on the trancontinental (english) FB group - cannot link it here sorry) ok, found it on twitter Obviously Hungary was quicker for Hayden. Amazing they go completely different ways between CP2 and CP3 and then meet up. frrt.org/tcrno5/map?center=48.33069,13.17261&zoom=7

Interesting to also follow the mid-pack and backmarkers also.
Even the scratchers who have posted their experience and show that no matter how strong/organised you are, things can happen outside your control (esp Garmins/phones/getting lost/roads closed/etc)

Is it only 5 days so far since the start?? 124 hours from the start. Est distance from start to CP2 is 1200km. To get here by this point works out at about 240kms per day. I think CP2 is 'officially' closed today. The leaders are almost on double that 2350km so far. FYI 1200km is also the distance that large audaxes are, eg PBP, Syd2Melb etc. Time limit from audax for 1200km ride is 90 hours. I'm not sure how to process this information. Does this mean that TCR is doable for mere mortals? I think I might have to use this as motivation and up my audax game, and do a 300km audax this month. ETA Obviously there is the small matter of getting over the alps as well
