Kept for posterity: I've told you most if the differences between the two. And some of what this means on how the components work. It's not my opinion at all, pretty much fact. You appear to want this to be some sort of comp or fight. But don't seem to understand any of what I type or what it means. Hopefully readers of this have a little more up there and make better choices of fudging components. Hardly moderator behaviour really. I saw the posts you deleted by the way. Tut tut.

This one's a classic, I will repeat - none of my posts have been deleted : Oh and never said either was wrong or right. Just that the sora would of been better but not perfect. Gave plenty of reasons why and differences between them and some of what that means. Blue writing was to make a valuable bit of info stand out amongst the rest of the drivvle. Steering it down the toilet, grow up.

OP, suggest ringing the place you ordered and checking through with them, if the front derailleur, chain and cassette aren't happy together it may not be a positive step, I'll certainly agree with that - can't actually find any precise info on this but best not take the risk ... and for the record ... I do believe I'm wrong on the chainset width, which makes @kombatcookie right and apologies if this has wound him up with the thread departure - however, I still can't find the info to prove it to myself or all of us for certain, if I find it I'll pop it up. @kombatcookie , relax fella.

I'm not techy at all and each to their own. I got my experience and I know quite a few on here have tiagra chainset with stock cassette fd and chain and are v happy. Not saying perfect and sure it would be even better with 10 speed everything...however per others will work totally fine and probably better than stock! Also if ever want to upgrade further then got 10 speed chainset ready to go.

That's the trouble with this issue, I have looked at it a few times and can find people arguing both ways; interestingly, one trader (as he stated on another forum) suggested it can work ok with 8 parts and 10 cranks but there are differences that effect the quality (again, not yet precisely defined), so he has to advise against it, the default position being to stay with specified compatibility. It's clear that all derailleurs are fairly rough engineering, forcing metal to change lines, so it's somewhat subjective and can come down to preferences, in which case the manufacturers and suppliers either just leave you with 'your grade' or entice you to spend more on further 'upgrades'. Whether either view is 'wrong' is not resolved yet IMO - I'd like to test it back to back, so if you do buy that Tiagra robertsims we would be able to do exactly that .

so in laymans terms, having just had a Tiagra chainset (crank) installed on my T3, should I have gone with the sora one instead???

so in laymans terms, having just had a Tiagra chainset (crank) installed on my T3, should I have gone with the sora one instead??? Does the new crankset move the chain round when you pedal? Does the FD move the chain from one chainring to the other? If the answer is yes to the above, be happy that you have a decent upgrade on your bike.

Well this thread has certainly caused some differences of opinion lol. I'm going to stick with the tiagra (or rather not cancel my order). After carefully reading all the posts, speakig to my lbs and doing some research myself, I'm pretty happy with my decision. The Tiagra rings are the exact same size as the ounce rings,, the derailier is doing the same job on both cranks, the hollotech 2 is a better quality bb, the metal used on the Tiagra is of better quality than the sora and ounce, and I prefer the look of the silver Tiagra compared to the black ounce. The T3 is a bit of a mish mash anyway. The width of the rings on the tiagra may be slightly thinner. But with the forward motion of the chain, I'm hoping it wont make any difference. As for the front derailier taking slightly longer to move the chain from cog to cog, this doesn't bother me. As long as it rides nice once it's on, I'll be happy. So thanks to everyone for their input and advise. And I'll put an unbiased review on here, once I've had chance to check out my results. Peace and love.

enjoyed reading that fwiw ive got an 7 yes seven spd cassette and sora rear, tiagra front mech and an ofmega vantage double chainset on bike 2, am i in trouble? lol, works fine but honestly I personally would keep all matching in speed terms even if not manufacturer, play the easy ball, make life easy for yourself but if the faff is tolerable knock yourself out some folk run campag shifters with shimano gear, some people even have a deda stem when their seatpost isnt
