You say that but I have had (occasionally still get a twinge of) Leg Bicep Tendonitis and it's not pleasant - makes the hand, feet n butt pains / numbness pale into insignificance and I am wary of kicking it off again.

Well thanks to people on the forum I've just ordered the tiagra tripple from ribble for £52. My local bike shop is supplying the hollotech2 and fitting it for £40 which I'm really happy with. Thanks for the advise from Rad, spaceflight etc and a massive thanks to captslog for a massive message (even though I went for tiagra in the end)

I hope you're pleased with the result, although I have no reason to think that you won't be.

IYHO! What's troubling you @kombatcookie , what would be the point of putting another guy's choices down , they're his choices to make, even if you don't agree with the logic, surely it's each to his own even if you don't agree?

OP best course of action imo now would be to talk to Ribble and see if you can refuse delivery or something so it gets returned for free, and order the Sora one, it's a bit cheaper, more compatible and looks better.
The 10 speed Tiagra chainset cog spacing will be too narrow for the 9 speed front DR and fat 8spd chain. The ramps are also designed for narrow 10spd chains. It'll work somewhat though if you cba'.
Same BB as I linked in the last post.

Explain in more detail - quoting references / explaining source of conclusions for the incompatibility issues please?

10 speed chainset... narrow cog spacing for narrow chains. Needs narrow front derailleur for right amount of chain contact throw. Chain ramps on cogs shaped for narrow width of chain. Chain lines are going to be a bit off.
The 8 speed shifters shift the derailleur a specific distance, a 10 speed front derailleur won't work and couldn't be a solution now. The chain movement would be a little too much and too little.
The 9spd Current derailleur comes in to contact at a specific time for a specific amount of throw. With the 10 speed chainset, it is going to be too much chain throw at times and too little shifting down. Not 100% correctable by reducing cable tension.
The fat 8 speed chain is going to be making contact with the 10 speed ramps when it should not.

Also as a rule. Should always match speed of chainset to front derailleur at a minimum. The ramps on the derailleur and cogs work together. Along with the chain link profile.

You might be right on a super refined level but perhaps we should define what micro level of criticism we are judging these drivetrain issues upon? Define your premise and criteria for assessment - on what level are we deciding that a Sora or a Tiagra are incompatible? I presume you're not just defending your own choice for Sora? We're only talking a few quid difference in price with this crank - yawn!

I don't think you portray a real assessment of how they actually work; I also think your instinct for the issues is pretty awesome but the reality is not necessarily what you conclude and that is in fact a less clinical scenario than the one going on in your bonce - all good though !
