Trying to run 28 tyres and mudguards on my beloved T3 is becoming a great frustration. They broke (yet again) today.
So Im thinking about a new bike... priorities are:
good clearance for 28+ with guards comfy ride - for audaxing suitable for panniers for light touring, shopping and commuting sturdy wheels weight not a big issue max price - about a grand, but that is an absolute max.
2 options - buy a new bike - will mean my T3 becomes a summer racer. Or buy a frame and transfer everything from T3 - will prob need some new long drop brake calipers, and no disc brakes - or id need new wheels too. A full new bike means some saving, i could buy a new frame now.
Im not going to show you my ideas at the moment, Id like to see your creative ideas without being polluted by my thoughts.
Many thanks.

That decoupler gadget looks interesting. Tho I tend to prefer tried and tested to state of the art. Id looked at the triban, but 650 for essentially the same bike seems a waste. Thanks for the tips, having fun windows (10) shopping .

Excuse my ignorance but what is the same with a T3 & T540?

Excuse my ignorance but what is the same with a T3 & T540? not really the same at all, the main difference is the bigger tyre clearance on the new frame. The 540 also has better wheels and groupset than the original T3. My T3 already has an upgraded groupset and wheels - hence "same bike" comment.

I was looking at a Whyte Suffolk as I wanted disc brakes for my winter bike. Decided in the end that I didn't really 'need' them and worried about the weight of it being similar if not more than my T5.
I then thought about a really lightweight carbon Whyte Stowe Ultegra with discs. On Ebay reduced from £3.1k to £1.7k. But then thought that it would be 'better' than my summer bike and I would be nervous in riding such an expensive bike in the winter.
Then my head kicked in and I realised that I didn't really need anything more than my T5 in the winter and for commuting plus the Mach in the summer and for sportives.
The problem you have is that you have one of the leading bikes in the price point that you have identified (especially since you have upgraded the groupset). So, the difference to other bikes in the BTwin range are minimal - Clearance for larger tyres/mudguards being the main difference.
In my case, I've decided that I will wait for a disc brake Triban to come along before I replace my T5 and I will think long and hard about whether I do. For you, I would suggest thinking about whether it makes sense to buy a £1k bike when you clearly still like the upgraded T3 and could run it with perhaps 25mm or 23mm and not break the mudguards. Or surely there is some way to modify the mudguards to make them work? (Or maybe use a different type?)

If you're going for a new bike then discs make a lot of sense, particularly for the hilly area you live in and all weather use. I've looked at Whytes but am put off by the geometry as they have very long top tubes. I like the look of the GT Grades which have mudguard eyes but I don't think seatstay carrier bosses (you can get seatclamps with them on). One of the boxes they tick on my list is a traditional threaded bottom bracket as there are lots of stories of creaking press fit ones. For a frame upgrade longer drop calipers or even mini v's aren't expensive and frames should be cheaper meaning you can still use the upgrades you've bought for the T3, particularly your dynamo front wheel which would become redundant if it's a summer racer. Maybe as Paulinblack suggests slightly narrower tyres are the short term solution while you save up and see what develops with discs (and what Decathlon brings out )

Worth considering with the 540 that the groupset and wheels alone, both consumables which you will have to replace for the T3, are worth about £450 so the frame cost is about £200.

for a temp solution ive bought a cheap pair of old style sks raceblade xl - only 16 quid. I know they are short, but the new ones dont look much longer and i plan to rig a extension from old guard and rivet gun. They dont go under the brakes, so hopefully will work, and arrive in time for next week's audax. chas - i would like disc brakes, but, as you say...would mean getting a new disc dynamo wheel (think i could get decent money for mine on ebay). and yeah, i have been looking at the CdF range - i like =) here's some bikes ive been looking at... new 631 audax from spa cycles no upgrades needed. crap wheels - but could keep them for daily use and buy a handbuilt rear to match my front. - frame only is 250 budget option - tho again would need a new dynamo wheel, and the components are rather... budget Planet X Kaffenback would need to get a dynamo disc wheel, and prob a new rear wheel. guards and pannier. frame is only 144 at the mo, tho still cheaper to buy bike than build from scratch. and as chas said the CdF range. so - would like discs - would mean a new front wheel at about 150 quid (minus what i can get for my current wheel).

Thanks. I'd forgotten that post. As said I do love my T3, just need some clearance. Hopefully can sort some mudguard cover while I patiently wait for the spring.
