Nearly time for the next bike - the 500SE is getting a bit old and the bottle bosses are very wobbly. Saved enough for a new one so am thinking of getting a Triban RC 500 Great choice, just had a good review on Road.cc road.cc/content/review/259930-triban-rc-500-disc-road-bike Your bottle cage bosses can be easily tightened if you can still undo the bolts. Yeah, I saw that Chas, looks just what I'm after; relaxed geometry, comfortable, good range of gears, disc brakes - frame sounds a bit heavy but then again it has half an eye on light touring duties with the rack and mudguard mounts so fair enough. Interested in how to tighten the cage bosses up though?

They work like a pop rivet, to tighten without the special tool you can use a long bottle cage bolt, a nut and a couple of washers. Thread the nut on to the bolt, then a couple of washers then screw in to the boss. Hold the bolt with an allen key and tighten the nut against the washers hopefully without the boss turning, this will squash the boss onto the frame. Loosen the nut, unscrew the bolt and check for tightness.

Agghhh!! Can't decide between Triban RC 500, or a 2017 Giant Contend 1!
This is the new winter bike decision.
Both Sora-equipped. The Contend is lighter and I suppose you might say 'pedigree' (although I don't give too much weight to that)
The RC 500 is heavier BUT has disc brakes, massive tyre clearance (handy if I ever decide to do light touring), and I kind of like the dropped seatstays.
Damn you, Pauls Cycles, I'd made up my mind then they go and throw that one in there!

I think that's edged it enough for me

Looking forward to doing some winter miles and maybe some touring/bikepacking? (NC500 is a long-term ambition at some point in my life)

For winter/bikepacking the Triban RC is much better with bigger tyres, more clearance, mudguard/rack mounts and disc brakes. If you don't want discs to save a bit of weight the old Triban 520 would be better than the Giant.

Spoke too soon Delivery issues, was due today but basically they were late sending the bike out to the courier (I think - apparently it's at the depot now). The chap on the Decathlon customer services hotline said it was due to 'double-checking the bike to make sure nothing was wrong with it'. If that's true, then that's simultaneously amazing customer service and downright incompetence not to make a delivery deadline they themselves have set. Hopefully getting a new delivery date this afternoon, I'm not actually that confident of it happening, as I'm not sure how competent the customer service guy is I'm not sure how competent the courier company are It's a Friday afternoon lol We shall see! I kind of feel like someone from on high needs to 'encourage them roubustly' in order that I get the bike I've paid for. Oh well! Have a good weekend everyone!

That does not sound to good, must be an increase in sales, i know there were some bargain bikes in the clearance sales because i bought one, and my delivery date is on this Monday, which is a Bank holiday, i was getting ready to strip all my gear of the T3 ready to install on the Ultra 500 when it arrives, might have quick ride out whilst i am waiting, still i am off shift from Tuesday waiting with baited breath.

Hi folks, I've been out of the loop for a while, I must contribute more. I'm just prepping the 500SE for winter so thought I'd let you know about the other one. I was fortunate enough to buy a second hand carbon Cannondale Evo 6 in the summer. Bare frame, so it needed everything - wheels, gears, brakes etc - a decent sized list. Priced it all up and put Shimano 105 and lime green bar tape on to match the frame colour! When I say bare frame, I mean bottom bracket, headset bearings, the little plastic cable guide under the bottom bracket, everything. Found a Cannondale spares website that had exploded diagrams and part numbers which helped.
It took less than two weeks to build at lunchtimes, it would have been quicker but I made a daft error and ordered the wrong front derailleur mount type and had to wait for the return item. Well, lets just say that I'm not going to save any more money by using this one instead of old faithful but it's giving me the pleasure of the perceived speed increase. Only ridden it about 10 times and it's nearly time to put away for the winter! Old faithful is having new cassette, chain etc next week. In fact, the new bike is having a cassette change already, 11-25 is too big for me. I've ordered a 105 compatible cassette that is 14-25 and looks like it has the right ratios for me. I don't race/club cycle so its just for commuting. I'm waiting to see how this works with the rest of the kit.

Now the winter bike is in use (great bike now the teething problems have been sorted), I'm looking at replacing the summer bike.
Summer bike is a Ribble R872 but unfortunately it's just a little too big for me, I did have a bike fit but I prefer a smaller frame now, I think it's from having a sedentary job.
Anyway.....trying to choose. Essentials are a carbon frame, and I would prefer a disc brake bike. Groupset minimum is Tiagra. Any thoughts, guys? I quite like the Giant Defy Advanced 3 - the small rear triangle thing appeals to me for some reason haha.

Far be it from me to tell you how to spemd your money (tho that's exactly what I'm doing!), but seems like a lot of effort & cost just for a commuting bike. Isn't Shimano 105 overkill for the intended usage? Sounds like an interesting project anyway.

I'd wait until spring, the bikes you're looking at now may be discounted and the new Vanrysel disc bikes will be coming out:)
