I'd wait until spring, the bikes you're looking at now may be discounted and the new Vanrysel disc bikes will be coming out:) Good point Chas, any ideas what the new bikes are?

No details as yet but there will be a choice of alloy or carbon frame with different specs of each following the pattern of the current model lineup. I must admit to being a disc convert with my RC520 and have since been disappointed with the rim brakes on my summer bike in the wet, so I think if they look good I may have an n+1 coming on myself

Hi folks, I've been out of the loop for a while, I must contribute more. I'm just prepping the 500SE for winter so thought I'd let you know about the other one. I was fortunate enough to buy a second hand carbon Cannondale Evo 6 in the summer. Bare frame, so it needed everything - wheels, gears, brakes etc - a decent sized list. Priced it all up and put Shimano 105 and lime green bar tape on to match the frame colour! When I say bare frame, I mean bottom bracket, headset bearings, the little plastic cable guide under the bottom bracket, everything. Found a Cannondale spares website that had exploded diagrams and part numbers which helped. It took less than two weeks to build at lunchtimes, it would have been quicker but I made a daft error and ordered the wrong front derailleur mount type and had to wait for the return item. Well, lets just say that I'm not going to save any more money by using this one instead of old faithful but it's giving me the pleasure of the perceived speed increase. Only ridden it about 10 times and it's nearly time to put away for the winter! Old faithful is having new cassette, chain etc next week. In fact, the new bike is having a cassette change already, 11-25 is too big for me. I've ordered a 105 compatible cassette that is 14-25 and looks like it has the right ratios for me. I don't race/club cycle so its just for commuting. I'm waiting to see how this works with the rest of the kit. Far be it from me to tell you how to spemd your money (tho that's exactly what I'm doing!), but seems like a lot of effort & cost just for a commuting bike. Isn't Shimano 105 overkill for the intended usage? Sounds like an interesting project anyway. Isn't that what N+1 is all about?

On the 105 point: I think once you have had 105 or Ultegra then you don't really want to drop back to Sora. I had Sora on my Triban 5a and then bought a Mach with 105. The Triban became the commuter and winter hack. I had some stopping issues in the winter and thought I'd replace it with a disc brake bike. I decided to go to 105 rather than Sora as the 105 on the Mach was far superior to Sora imho. That's not saying that Sora was bad and yes it would have been satisfactory, but I preferred 105. The Mach eventually got replace by an Ultra with Ultegra Di2. Now, if I could get it at a decent price (which I doubt I could), I'd replace the winter hack with a bike with Di2. Again, I find it better than 105, but 105 is sufficient for my needs.
