thats the problem with phone apps.. the battery runs out so quick. I have a battery case for the iphone, with this on and all the usual turned off on the phone i can ride for 6hrs and refer to the screen regular without the battery running out. It wouldn't last 6hrs with the screen on all the time.

Am I right in saying that you need a 3G signal for this, as it is very patchy anywhere in the country (one of my rides, I can't get a basic signal)? I know on my friends Garmin they plot the route at home, upload it and then get very basic arrow directions from GPS. I am sure that there must be something on the iPhone. yes there is - viewranger Viewranger looks very impressive. I think that I will give this a go and buy a battery pack for my iPhone.

Created a route on google maps then export to viewranger website then sync to iphone. Make sure that you have the free map sectors cached and bring up the route and you are ready to go. Awesome but it killed my battery easily. So haven't used it for ages. Just having fun playing boys scout and using google maps. Even so I can say it works.

Another phone mapping app to try is Orux maps, it's great for creating offline routes to take with you as a back up too. Bit of a complicated interface but worth persevering with.

whats the model battery pack used? I've got this one, picked it up cheap when HMV shut down. This one ( link) came on an email yesterday, not a bad price but can't really comment on the quality.
