Good point about the Tiagra 10 speed ChrisD, I was thinking similar earlier today when contemplating the 105 v Sora price point leap in relation to the 540 and 520. I'd be well up for seeing what price they could knock out one of these style bikes with a vfm groupo; the Tiagra option makes sense to me, it should pull the price down a bit, allowing the money to go on the discs instead - it's sort of an in between groupo but somewhat overlooked / underrated IMO. Good quality but easy to maintain cable discs would make sense to accompany this idea. I'd like to see a no fuss bike, kind of like a 4x4 Fiat Panda of old, basic Fiat Pandas were not great in the standard format but the 4x4 was a cheap and shabby chic Alpinists' runaround, paired down and quirky but you could still go anywhere when the white stuff fell in the mountains; I might be pushing it a bit far to take motorcar styles of old and translate it into cycling terms in that way but you'll get my gist. I'd like a do anything tool, functional and robust at serious bang for buck pricing ... allowing me to get out all over the place in all weathers, when drive train parts wear out, just replace them; ensure the wheel hubs are bullet-proof though. The wheels I put up earlier had Hope hubs and Mavic rims, with lots of Sapim spokes, the sort of wheels tourers and audaxers use, if the hubs are robust as I think they are, then something like those should do nicely but not sure how much they weigh - keeping weight at circa 9.5kg ish would be a good target. I might just have to buy a P-X frame and build my own at this rate !

I might just have to buy a P-X frame and build my own at this rate ! If you do, then list all the part, sourcing and cost please! I'll purchase the same and drive down the road for a cuppa or two.

Frame most viable at best sale price (£150) - colours not great though. For £200 you can get more stealthy black or rugged camo. Then the Tiagra is not as cheap as I had imagined in my head (from Ribble prices anyway), at least it's not as low as it should be if it's middling value, it's not set at half way between 105 n Sora, far from it, as almost at 105 price. Sora is considerably more cost effective and arguably fits the semi disposable parts philosophy better, is 18 gears enough (probably - 5 n 9). Reckon circa £600 would build a cool stealthy black or perhaps preferably a rugged looking camo version, can sort that easy enough, perhaps bring it in far less with some deal spotting. I've also got various tubes, stems, seats n bars etc rattling about if I was minded to keep nearer £500 as a target but it would be nice to go all new.

I'm guessing that a pair may be around £300 although there are a lot of buying options mixing spokes and rims. More specs. Not looking good for Pauls' budget Also a lot of controversy around about QRs not being up to the job on the front as reaction to braking forces tend to push the axle out of the drop outs.

If enough people are interested there could potentially be some decent discounts for buying in bulk

All this interest does indeed suggest that the demand is there. C'mon BTWIN..!!

I have nothing sensible to add to this discussion but I do have a soft spot for old Fiats including this one. I was given free it to dispose of but both my kids learnt to drive in it and it served us well for several years.

How about a hub gear. ?I am not sure these are the answer for lightweight road bikes but they surely would have an application for city bikes and commuters. They must be more robust and relatively maintenance free compared with derailleur gears. I absolutely hated the 3 speed Sturmey Archer gearing on the pig iron bike I had as a kid. I was so jealous of a boy at school who had derailleur gears which were a bit of a novelty back then.

Hub gears have always appealed to me, I was watching this on ebay but decided it was a bit small, I'm waiting 'til next year to see what B'twin bring out.
