Usual guide is to have 2-3mm stack above the stearer tube before the top cap goes on. As long as the Allen bold reaches the star but then all is well to tighten up till the play in the headset it gone. Then clamp the stem tight.

Clamp plus existing spacers = 32mm so I should be able to combine a 15 and some 5 or 3s to allow some adjustments. Get some on next visit.
@fluffkitten measurements for clearance: Hub centre to brake skewer centre = 360mm Tyre (23mm) to caliper bottom = 11mm Tyre to brake skewer centre = 22mm

I've obviously not been clear, the gap I'm on about is between the forks, not a lot the callipers can do about that and explains why I had to chop the front off my mudguards.

New Specialized FACT Carbon forks fittedArrived today, bargain, brand new from Ebay, Best offer of Β£45 accepted. Came with 242mm alloy steerer so I had to be carful cutting it down to 220mm (still allows plenty of tube to have spacers and stem), that was the only slightly difficult bit, then knocking out the star nut from the old bit and tapping it into the end of the open end. Look pretty sweet black white and red. This has ben discussed recently on other boards, clearance between tyre and fork. While I had the chance here is a shot for these forks. Looks like 9-10mm with a 23mm tyre (not much room) I don't run mudguards so I'm OK. And for those conscious about weight... We have: T3A steel fork 220mm steerer (54cm bike) at 1,100g Carbon fork with 220mm alloy steerer at 560g I make that a 540g saving (a biddon of drink worth!)

Those forks really look the part Ian. It will be interesting to know what difference they make to the handling.

Just found out these forks come in. Red + black with white inside (not too dissimilar to the T3 forks) and white + black with red inside

Clamp is indeed ugly, stem spacers on next visit to PL-X, forgot to measure them before last time I was there. Where did you get your carbon ones from?
