I hear this from quite a few people but if I'm honest in the 2 big events I've done (one sportive and one charity ride) I had nothing but nice comments from others and interest in what bike was like as they had heard great reviews and couldn't believe it for the money.

I'd wager it's exactly that type of person who gives the sneers. It's their way of making themselves feel better when they realise they spent way too much on a bike.

It's odd that some will spend more on a stem than I spent for my whole bike and then think that somehow this makes them a better rider, but the behaviour you described goes beyond snobbery and is just plain rudeness.
I've had exactly the same sort of snobbery from anglers in the past when I turned up with my cheapest possible kit. Fortunately, the fish have no idea what the rod cost, and they take the bait just the same much to the disgust of those who spent lots on tackle. Furthermore, if I manage to land the same size fish on inferior equipment, then surely I'm the better fisherman?
I don't know how I would have responded, but I know it would have spoilt my day, perhaps it's a good job you're not up to catching up with them?

My LBS were surprised at how nice the bike was and said they'd had quite a few triban owners in the shop.

My LBS were surprised at how nice the bike was and said they'd had quite a few triban owners in the shop. I've had similar experiences. Some people initially turn their noses when the hear I have a T3, then they see it in the flesh and comment how smart it looks. Then I point out the frame was made in Italy in a Deda factory they began to respect the bike a bit more…

the grabbing hand grabs all it can, all for themselves afterall....its a competative world if you have a triban you have the the sneering rights over budget bike riders, if you have a triban, orbea riders have the sneering rights over you i dont subscribe to that personally but that is the fact of the matter, not just bikes either, cars, houses, salaries, wanger size best thing to do is laugh it off, suck up some air and go and beat the sneerer, if you can, great, if you cant well you arent on the 8k bike and that is the reason why isnt it

I must admit, nailing them on the next hill does a lot to destroy any snobbery....or at least make you not give a damm!

Those people really annoy me. It's pretty fun when you drop people like that on £?000 carbon bikes on your £300 triban.

They were probably jealous that they overspent by £1000's and cant really go much faster, i pass many a top notch carbon racer costing god knows what, and get that smug satisfaction that i spent £300 and im older than them and leave them behind, your time will come when you can do that.

I was worried about this when I joined my club, but there is no such thing. a few guys use tribans. There is another club nearby that I was thinking of joining, but they are very elitist and a fear they are bike snobs. the club captain, rides a Cervelo in the summer and a De Rosa in the winter (the De Rosa is an alu frame that cost £600 just for the frame! dread to think what the Cervelo cost)

I'm more interested in establishing eye contact and giving them a friendly wave and smile than looking at what they are riding. It's a shame that a lot of the camaraderie is disappearing from the roads. Quite a lot of cyclists can't be arsed to even nod an acknowledgement these days and look thoroughly miserable while pursuing their sport. C'est la vie.
