So I think it would be sensible to buy a helmet for the first time :/
Got my Triban to 38mph earlier! Got me thinking about safety gear.
I have absolutely no idea about helmets.
What are good brands?
Theres a huge selection and price difference, more expensive the better protection? Or not? It's hard to tell, there are a lot of good reviews for £30 ones and a lot of good reviews for £80 ones! And all the official magazine reviews all suggest different ones.
I see a lot of them are excessively pointy at the back, surely this is dangerous in a rear head impact?
Going to buy gloves and some eye wear too, too many flies getting in my eyes!

That's a good question actually, i don't know myself. Be interesting to see what everyone else suggests.

I went through this recently as my old helmet needed replacing. I read approx 1,000,000 online reviews, carefully examined my bank balance and as a result went into Decathlon and bought a new Bell lid that fitted nicely and was on offer.

I use a specialized Align helmet - the US helmets must be impact tested so you are asured of some strength.
Fully adjustable head band - very important if you decide to wear a skull cap at some point.
Extra foam pieces provided for minor fitting changes.
Very well ventilated
The peak is easily removable if you dont like the mountainbike look
Still only £30.

Buy what you like and the best you can afford. I would stick with the big brand names because they have been around longer and you can find them if anything goes wrong.
I have a Specialise lid that set me back £50.

These are good if you don't mind a bit of wind resistance... But seriously, I have a Specialized one that my lads bought me. Nice and comfy and doesn't get too warm.

A helmet is not going to do anything if you come off at 38mph. nor are they any help in an rta with a vehicle - they are not tested or manufactured to anything like the same specs as a motorbike helmet. Their sole purpose is to reduce the risk of head injury in low speed impacts - i.e. when you have come off your bike of your own accord close to stationary or at low speeds. But I do find the sun visor exceptionally useful!
I have a Specialized Tactic (mountain bike helmet) which was around £80. One point to note with Specialized is that if you do kill your helmet in an accident within the first 2 years of its life, you can return it to them and they will give you a 40% discount off its replacement. I used this service earlier this year when I came off my mountain bike and smashed my helmet into 4 pieces...

I also have a Giro Savant. I find it comfortable and light.
Be sure to try some on as although they are adjustable, they do come in different sizes.

Try a Spanish brand called Spiuk, quite unknown but very good quality and used by some on the pro tour. I bought a new Spiuk Zirion for £20.00 delivered on ebay, which is a bargain as these things retail at £50 plus in some stores. Had a Met before, this is much better.

mavic plasma - same deal as spesh, 2 year crash discount warranty
it doesnt matter if you are off down the shops or heading up the col du galibier for the seventh time, a helmet provides better protect than none, cant believe its not law
like saddles and shoesits very much a personal fit thing so whats good for one isnt necessarily good for another, youll need to try a few on
