Should I buy one of these to replace my T5? Persuade or dissuade me! My reasons for: - Winter is coming and so it the poor weather. I'm fed up with cleaning the grime from the brakes off on the wheels - Clearance for mudguards and 25-28mm tyres. I don't get as good a ride on the 22mm and Aksiums on my T5 as I do on the same wheels with 25mm tyres on the Mach - Disc brakes My reasons against: - More expensive than I'd like - Maybe I should wait for the Sora model (a better price point for me perhaps). To convert to hydraulic brakes would only cost £50. But Sora on my T5 is rubbish compared to 105 on the Mach - I could get another brand with similar specs cheaper. But would I get the same customer service? - The T5 is a perfectly acceptable commuter and winter hack

this bike can easily replace Mach (I know that wasn't a question ), it is lighter, has better wheels and groupset, but ... then: how would you know which size to buy? Or whether it even fits you? What do reviews tell you? Perhaps, you could tell us what is it that you like about Mach? And, how do you figure you can upgrade to hydro disc brakes for 50?

Now this is a bike i really like the look of, the disc brakes i’ve been contemplating for a while now, my + 1 is you like. I doubt though if i would get it past the lady of the house not without a lot of persuasion or is that grovelling.

It doesn't have disks but the £250 triban 100 looks like a great winter bike that takes bigger tyres and costs 1/5th the price! If I had the space, I'd love one as the do it all bike: Can't really talk you out of the GF, it looks good. I suppose the only thing I would ask is are you realistically going to be changing tyres? I hear the 105 direct mount brakes will take 28mm tyres is that sways you is any way? I( don't know for sure though as I don't have one)

I still don't get this bike. They forgot the rack mounts... about as poor as forgetting the fork.

What I like about the Mach is that it is lighter than my T5. I like the semi compact crankset. It feels 'fast'. 105 changing is lovely. I also like the look of the bike. With 25mm Lithions on it feel really stable and gives a good ride. I also like being stretched out a bit on it. Think the reason I didn't get one when they came out is because I haven't seen one in the flesh and haven't been able to try one. Hydraulics: I was being daft. Was quoted £50 for a set to go on my son's mtb.

Shame the gearing isn't really adaptable to the Alps, would struggle on climbs with 48-34. Looks ideal as a commuter bike though if you live in a flattish area.

That's why I haven't started a thread about it, because I'm not considering it at all.

I still don't get this bike. They forgot the rack mounts... about as poor as forgetting the fork. My initial reaction, as yours was 'they don't know what they're doing' but clearly to have got this far they do and it's just a case of it being designed for a different market. For this country the obvious candidate to me for disc brakes is the 520/540 frame which with a bit of tweaking could be a great tourer/winter/gravel bike with clearance and mounts for all the guards and racks you want. Instead we have a disc braked 'sportive' style bike which good though it is (and I think with the groupset and wheels you will struggle to better it) isn't the great 'all rounder' a lot of us are looking for. To me the big advantage of discs is in wet weather for their predictable performance and lack of rim wear and that means you want mudguards. You could fit Crud Roadracer mk3's which look better than previous temporary guards and suit this style of bike, but a dedicated commuter imo wants proper permanent full guards, if this had them I'd probably have bought one myself already. (I may yet be tempted by the 500 when it arrives if I can work out a neat way to attach them).

Or just forget discs for the time being and get a Triban 520, the new Sora works a treat and is cheap to maintain, the new wheels look strong and have cartridge bearings and it has the clearance for 28mm tyres and full guards

The 'new' Sora and 28mm tyres on their own aren't enough for me to change. For me, potentially lighter, more responsive and a compact chainset need to come with the next commuter - In addition to the discs)
