I'm doing too much running lately (2-3 times/~20km a week)... but I've found it making me lose weight easier, and it's definitely core work... maybe good cross training.

I've surprised myself by enjoying starting running over this winter, Kalenji owner's club anyone?

I've surprised myself by enjoying starting running over this winter, Kalenji owner's club anyone? You'll be shocked to hear I run in a full set from foot to head in Kalenji! Here's me a park run a few weeks ago

I wouldn't expect anything less Rob I'm mostly Kalenji but Btwin base layers if needed and sometimes tops, nice to have the pockets. I've just started doing my local Parkrun and loving it, pleased and surprised to be the fastest in my age group (55-60) a couple of times

My running started when my 7yo daughter asked me to do park run with her. I have a group of friends you go and socialise after, and then Katy asked me how fast I could do it without her (because I did 27 minutes with her, wearing a track suit on a day she got hot in t shirt and shorts). So next time I did it alone, and I was pretty quick, 21:32 (I'm down to 20:01 6weeks later). And I then injured my neck, I couldn't ride the bike outdoors for a couple of weeks, but running was fine... And I got faster and a taste for it.
Helps my (new ish) gf is just getting into running... Though she's much slower than me.
I'm convinced that 2runs a week is helping my general wellbeing too.

I've tried to run a few times over the last few years, mainly to help with cyclocross but an old achilles strain has always flared up. Last autumn my daughter suggested I try the 'couch to 5k', I didn't follow it properly but took the principle of running and walking and have built steadily over the winter. Strava has been a great motivation, being able to see the improvements, I've been using my edge 25 with a velcro strap holding the mount to my wrist Now getting a time for the Parkrun and having people to chase is giving me even more incentive.

Splendid, some other runners on the forum I started a couch to 5K back in 2013 after realising I'd become a bit of a couch potato. I'd run a little in the past at school but nothing structured as I'd always suffered with sort knees. I've built things up slowly since then and am now comfortable running 25 miles per week with a mix including a long (8-10 mile) run, a quality session (hills, intervals, timed efforts), a ParkRun when not busy with my family and then another steady run with some people from work. I've found running very addictive especially the ParkRuns. My local run is mostly on grass so quick times are dependent on conditions. 19:02 is my quickest time there but I've dipped under 19mins at my parents ParkRun which is on gravel and tarmac paths and gone sub 18:50 on a hot and muggy evening race last year. I've also completed a couple of 10Ks and 1/2 marathons but find the costs of these events put me off doing more. All my running pals are deep into their marathon preparation and those running London have their longest runs (22 miles) this weekend. I'll probably run a marathon at some point but right now 10 miles is the max I really need to run for a summer of triathlons and duathlons.

PB at the parkrun this morning, 22.03 In mitigation for all this running talk, I did cycle there and back. I'll try and get round to some club 10s again this year I promise

I ran with Katy, hence 28:30-ish. Want to break 20minutes next week. Have park run and then maybe the Reading Decathlon 5k Sunday, so 2 chances.

Yey, more runners coming out the woodwork. Been a runner (plodder) for quite a few years. Lost the urge this last year though so really do need to get my mojo back. Done all distances inc 3 marathons (never again!!!) Someone give a kick up the arse to get out there and do more.

Full head-to-toe Kalenji here too. I was a runner for years before getting my road bike (before which my cycling needs were accommodated by mountain biking) and although I don't cover the annual distance I once did, I still run around 3 times a week and try to sneak in a half-marathon once a month. I avoid pavements, preferring cross-country. I'm lucky that both home and work are located near some lovely running country.

Not run once even for a bus since I did the Bristol 10k in 2012....until last week when mate nagged me for weeks to do a run with him with local running group. So did 10k in 55mins and felt totally fine at time and felt could have gone much faster....however next two days felt screwed and could hardly walks!!!!! Maybe zero to 10k in one run not brightest!!!! However my fastest ever run for first time (used do do some half marathons and stuff at uni) shows all cycling certainly helped fitness. Actually really enjoyed it and will go back occassionally.

7 and a bit miles last night running loops round my village. Playing about with various paces per mile (7:41, 7:25, 6:47, 7:42, 6:37, 6:10, 7:53, 7:39) in an effort to get myself mentally ready to start running some proper tempo/lactate threshold runs. I don't enjoy tempo runs but I don't think they are meant to be fun but from doing these runs last year I know the speed and endurance benefits are great.
Tempo for me would be
- 1 mile easy warm up @ 7:45-8:00 min/mile
either - 3 miles @ 6:30/mile pace or - 2x 2 miles tempo with a mile easy recovery
- 1 mile easy to cool down
I'd add distance to the middle section and aim to build to >20 mins at tempo pace

Well done Rob, great effort. I did a steady 30.48 with my son this week, first time he's run all of it. He looked like he was suffering at the end then outsprinted me to the finish. I'll run on my own next week and want to try to get under 22 min.
