Hi All just to touch on this topic once again.
I am soon to be going for the 105-5800 crank 175mm.
My question: Is there any advantage in choosing smaller crank arm lengths ? i.e. 172, 170 and 165
I am still using the compact crank set which the bike came with upon purchase. My frame is a Large Size and the crank arms are 175. I guess I am use to this size but I was just wondering if dropping down a size would improve peddling efficiency in any way shape to form ?
Thanks in advanced.

I switched to 175 standard crankset on the Alur for a 172.5 105 5750 as a warranty replacement.
I found very little difference, as let's face it, it's 2.5mm difference... Allegedly you will spin more / faster but my cadence before and after was around 90 Avg.
Think if you're having knee problems pushing the 175 then maybe try smaller crank arms, if not then I doubt it's worth it personally.
End of the day it's all down to personal preference.

Thanks arranj.
I have noticed a slight pain on my left knee but nothing at all on my right knee. I have had a bike fit done and I have rode like this for a year now. I left cycling in October 2015 and only have just got back on in the ending of Feb, and in recent times I have experienced knee pain on my left knee.
I was just wondering if in the time I have been away from cycling my knee has become weaker or the crank to long.
Strange one this.

Trouble with knee pain there are so many factors, I still get knee pain in certain positions, I'm still trying to find my perfect position even after my bike fit also.
If you need to change your cranks go for it and go for a 172, could make all the difference to you.
Or it could be that your left leg isn't your dominant leg and it's just not as good as your right! Could also be cleats or anything

I totally agree knee pain could well be related to many factors. I went out on a ride again today but this time with my cleats on as I was going to pack in some more miles through central London and weirdly enough I did not experience any knee pain this time round. I think my left knee is just naturally the weaker and the less dominant. I shall monitor my knee for the next week or so before biting the bullet in buying a shorter or the same size new crank. I just sometimes wish that they could lend consumers one for a week at most to try out for different sizes. This way customers will be able to gauge with much more accuracy which size works for them best. Thanks again
