Seriously though, I have three tins of Ambrosia that I picked up on special offer which I figured might make a hearty breakfast (just one tin) before setting off on my long commute to work. May reconsider now, perhaps a midnight 'snack' the night before to allow the creamy goodness time to settle. Can then have an extra half hour lie in and get up at 5.30 instead of 5am.

If you have it as a midnight snack you might poo the bed, Chris.

Ooooh nasty! We live on a hill and our bedrooms are downstairs so I don't think there's an altitude issue there, but better to be safe than soiled I always say.

I feel terrible for recommending rice pudding now... to be fair, it was a tip from my old throwing coach(used to be a hammer thrower and do highland games)and never seen one explode before...

I think it's a personal thing, for genetic reasons many people's digestion doesn't cope well with milk whilst others are fine. On a long ride you need fuel and the best food is what you personally like and have found works for you.

Jelly beans - food of the gods (or something like that anyway ) 75p for a bag which normally does 2 or 3 rides. I'm always popular at the impromptu food breaks on group rides as well So basically jelly beans make you popular - FACT

As a man on a very limited budget I never buy energy gels etc. My fav foods are: ...malt loaf, ... ...I cycle for fun and enjoy my snacks too.
Check out the new (?) Soreen varieties on special offer at Tesco if you can erictherat. Standard, apple and sultana, fruity five and banana - yum. Came back with several packs so I need to get out a lot over the next few weeks. Need to get a jar of peanut butter as it's good between two generous slabs of malt loaf.

Clutching at straws here but I guess you could swallow jelly beans for something like a sustained release effect. Chew one for now, swallow one for later perhaps.

What I want to know is which saddo thought up the idea of eating sweets in the shape of babies? You'd get locked up for that these days.

Here's a seasonal tip if you can manage to stop and chill out on a ride. Freshly picked blackberries. Free of charge straight from the bush. I can recommend the Irish varieties. They kept me fuelled up and were delicious.
