I posted this in the welcome area but not sure it'll be seen:
I'm 5'9" with a 32 cm inseam. The guy in Decathlon said that meant I fell pretty much bang in between the 54cm and 57cm frame size, so the choice was really down to how I felt. I went for the 57cm because on the 54cm I felt a bit cramped, too upright and could see the hub infront of the bars. Does this sound about right?

I'm 5'9 & 3/4" and I had the same issue. I went for the 54 because I felt a little too stretched on the 57. My other bike was professionally fitted and although the geometry is a bit more relaxed on the Triban, the effective top tube lengths match,
When I'm on the hoods or the drops, the hub is pretty much spot on with a little bias either way depending on the hand position.
the outcome is that my saddle is higher on the Triban than on my Cayo, but measuring from the pedal to the top of the saddle, they're the same

I am 5'9" and my 54 seems a spot-on fit.
Don't forget - there is enough wriggle-room from adjusting stem length, saddle height and lay-back to bring the sizes much closer to each other if you find you need to adjust.

I'm 5ft 10" and I'm perfectly happy with the 57cm triban 3. The 54cm frame would have been too small for me. My inside leg is 30 inch.

I went through the exact same problem. I'm 5ft9 and I don't know why, but I intially went for a 60. Yes yes huge mistake. Took it back and tried both the 54 and 57. Went for 57 in the end; however I was overreaching for a very long time making it uncomfortable. Simple answer was a shorter stem (90mm). Looking back on it, for me I think the 54 would of been uncomfortable in the long run so I'm happy with the 57. It is so very annoying when you are on the band of sizes, clothes are the worst. Makes shopping online pointless

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Seems I need to stop worrying about the frame size and just get out and enjoy my new T7. Get a feel for the fit and make any 'micro' adjustments from there.
This is a massive step up for me from a Halfords jobby carrying a Tourney (yes, Tourney) groupset so I can't wait to get out and pound the roads.
Need to think of a name for him now (before you ask I've already decided the T7 is definitely male). As he's French I'm thinking Gerard or Pierre. Maybe Leon to fit in with the stealth/ninja look of the bike. Tips welcome!
Are the French known for being a very small people with massive feet? Hobbits perhaps? My jersey from Decathlon is a Large (I've never bought clothing beyond a Medium before, usually Small) while their Btwin road shoes best fit was a 7.5. I normally take a 9! Got the Shimanos in the end!

I'd like to try the 54 again and possibly swap if i feel it will be a better fit. The 54 did feel very small in the store though. Which stem have you replaced the stock with?

I'm 5ft10 and went for the 57cm. I didn't go to a shop to try it out so had the same worries you have now. When it arrived it looked quite small so I was glad I didn't go for the 54cm. The saddle on mine is still quite raised so I would be concerned that on a 54 it would have to be raised a fair bit higher so you would be too high above the handlebars imo. I haven't got long arms either but I find the reach fine on my 57, if anything could possibly have a slightly longer stem. I've played around with moving the saddle back and forth and feel I have quite a good fit now. Did a 50 miler today and back / shoulders felt ok after so think I've got it about right!

Bike fit is very individual I know but would you mind checking how much seat post you have exposed? Do you have your saddle set forward or backward from 'middle' going by the useless numbers on the rails? I had to have the seat ridiculously high on the 54 to feel like i wasn't riding a kids bike. Sorry for the questions but having spent Β£600 on a bike I want to make sure I get the best fit possible.

When I got my T3 the stem was a bit low and I was stretching forward a bit too much, but I flipped it over so it pointed up slightly rather than down and that helped a lot. Maybe something you can try?

ohoward, I've got 125mm of seat post exposed (that excludes the top bit, ie the wedge shaped thing the saddle rails clamp into). My saddle sits pretty much dead centre of 0-30 scale on the rails
Hope that helps!

Yes, this was at the Lakeside branch (T3 bike for me by the way). It did help that I only had it for a day and no longer and well only took it out for 10mins and knew straight away it was to big. I did give the tyres a wipe with damp cloth, just to make it look new again for next person The way I knew it was to big for me was that I felt that pain in shoulders and lower back almost instantly and I know the 57 is much better fit because doing a 40mile ride yesterday, I have no pain in those parts. I hate to confuse you more but I did happen to pop into the Evans right across from Decathlon and he got me on a bike and said I should be around a 54.I replaced the 110mm which is standard for the T3 @ 57 for a 90mm. Stock Btwin stem, 14 quid I think. Perhaps even an 70/80mm would one day. All about small adjustments.

My advice would be, if you have your saddle position sorted so it's right with your feet/clip plump line and height is about right for length of your legs/pedal cycle, then do your hub test again and check your reach. If you have that slight 15-20 degrees bend in your arms and back is in comfortable position, neck not hurting then your good to go. If it's to far away (further than can be corrected with a shorter stem) then I'd go try out the 54. Also remember it does take time to get used to a road bike and feeling comfortable in that position. Good luck
