I came off my bicycle in April and had a traumatic brain injury (TBI). I had side effects with sensory-gating and short term memory problems. The accident was at 20 mph, not caused by an other road user and a bit of a mystery as it was on a flat road. Witnesses also said it was very strange. It's possible I blacked out, hit a small bump etc. I feel fine now by the way, after about 10 weeks of inconvenience.
Anyway, enough of the back story. That was my first accident in the last 12 years cycling and although I am keen to get on a bicycle again, I don't think my bike control is as good as it can be. (I think my road craft is fine, so although important, I am not looking for traffic riding advice).
I know how to ride a motorbike and that training gives you slow speed control drills which is some thing I can safely practice on grass on my pushbike.
What I don't know is if those skills translate to higher speed riding? Apart from riding fast, are there any safe ways to increase cycling skill for riding at speed on the flats and decent? I was thinking some velodrome instruction and club ride introduction but would like to hear suggestions.

have you ever tried mountain biking ? start on easy stuff, then progress to where you feel comfortable. start getting more ambitious. the ability to control a bike when it moves about a lot gives confidence. don't hang on for dear life, stay loose on the bike, let it do what it wants to do.

Thanks Gary. A friend at work suggested mountain biking for skill (he is a motocross and MTB rider). I do think that would improve my bike handling but I don't have access to a mountain bike. For now, just a road bike.
However I do note the suggestion. Wales has an awesome looking outdoor track place I would like to go and perhaps hire a bike - so maybe.

I found cyclocross gave me a lot more confidence at bike handling, a good introduction to racing as well. Never tried it but grasstrack racing might be something you could do on your Fuji if there's anything near you. For improving handling at speed following someone you trust helps. Are there any circuits near you where races take place, there may be practice sessions?

Myself and a few work pals have it shortlisted for a running / cycling trip but non of our partners are keen so finding a date is a small challenge. Here is a link for anyone that finds this thread: www.beicsbrenin.co.uk/trails/

chas Cyclocross and grasstrack sound like a great idea. There are definitely events within an hour from me so I will look into it once riding again.
