I was dragged to Fleetwood Freeport by the misses yesterday as it was her day off. As we walked around the Trespass store a reflective jacket caught her eye and she pointed out how effective it was even under the store lighting. She was keen for me to buy one and it certainly was tempting considering the long hours of darkness we have over winter. The Regatta store also had a basic Daretob with a rear pocket. I managed to keep the purse strings tightly drawn up and decided to do a bit of research instead of diving in. Does anyone on here use one? I looked at the Proviz versions a while ago. It would be nice to get a jacket that performed well in wet weather and served a function rather than just excelling at reflecting light.

Always been surprised that I don't see more of these when out and about at night (on the bike or in the car). I think early versions that were made completely from the highly reflective fabric had issues with breathability, and were certainly on the heavy side. I believe there are some versions available now with large reflective panels on the side as well as the back and front shoulders. Visibility from side on is a key area where these jackets can help I think. Boardman recently produced a version with a mesh back and zip off sleeves so it can be made into a gilet. www.halfords.com/cycling/cycling-clothing/jackets-gilets/boardman-mens-2-in-1-jacket-silver-reflectiveThe reviews on the Halfords site have mixed comments on breathability.

I was checking the Boardman out recently was and still am undecided. To be honest it would just more stuff...come to think of it when has that stopped the majority of us

Not like normal gear isn't reflective, just less big reflective. Any kit sold in the UK has to have at least some reflective bits.

I looked at the Proviz stuff not long after it came and saw lots of reviews commenting about lack of breath-ability. Still, I'm not sure whether any coat is truly breathable. I seem to recall them being about Β£80-90 at the time, which was more than I was willing to pay.

Proviz have a new version out which is supposed to be more breathable which would explain why their first attempt is now being discounted by online retailers. I might just get some reflective tape for my helmet etc. Reflective patches work well on ortlieb panniers.

I got a couple of rolls of reflective tape from eBay. Red and silver. Put it on frame and helmet. Works well.

Ive got the jacket from tresspass and overall it works really well. Only thing is that its not easyest to pack away i.e your back pocket nor is it really breathable so you get a bit sweaty when out. The good bits are these jackets can be seen from some distance away and my wife was shocked at how far it was. She bought the jacket as this is my first full year with the road and now feels tthat ill be safer as i can been

It's the breathability issue that puts me off but the reflective qualities look amazing. The reason for buying is safety at night and if I am wanting to take it off due to boil in the bag conditions I will be struggling to store it somewhere and compromising my safety by not wearing it.

Thats why my wife bought me it safety at night. what i tend to do is wear a thinner top under it something long sleeved under it so it takes longer for me to get all sweaty. Really like it plus the wife bought me cycling stuff thats a rare feat in my house

I got one of the proviz ones. It was off eBay so design is couple years old. Must admit I've been dissapointed. Use for my commute and it's not breathable so get really warm riding but then once I reach train station for next part of journey then left with layer of sweat that gets very cold.
Actually prefer my cheaper Aldi jacket but that doesn't offfer same reflection quality

I don't buy extra reflective or high viz tbh. my BLACK aerofit 700 Jacket is black... but it shows up clear as day in lights at night.
You aren't unsafe from people who can't see you, there are very few of those... it's the people that aren't looking that's the issue, and no amount of high viz/reflective will make any difference to them.
