Cycled to/from work once this week - elbow is really painful. It took around 15 mins longer than my usual (50 min) time as I kept stopping for water and a breather! It was triggered by being out of the saddle on the hills - push/pull on the handlebars. Normal riding was fine, I'll have a week off to let the tendons recover and then try again - stay in the saddle and rest the arms.

Still out of breath, nothing unusual about that considering you time off your bike. Stick with the ''normal riding'' by that I take it no hills for now, seems like the right decision to me. I feel sure you'll get there, given time. All the best.

No hills? hard to avoid! - I only use the bike to go to work and there's just the one good route. Well, hills might be the wrong word, slight inclines would be better. Hey, I cycle them so I can call them what I want! I'm going to pick up an exercise bike for my sons tomorrow so might just use it myself.

Well, after a good few months with just a couple of days per week cycle, it's time for an update and some news. My fitness hasn't dropped off too much, the arm was giving me grief but I could live with it. Strength and mobility are fine.
However, about 2 months ago there was the start of general aching with tenderness in areas. This got slowly worse until the sharp pain (enough to make me wince) when my arm is in certain positions - drying after shower, contact lenses in sort of thing. Told my Doc and an xray was arranged, that happened this afternoon. The pins are slowly slipping out from the bone, as can be seen by comparing to previous xrays (and the new lump on my elbow!) Looks to be sticking further out about 5-10mm, day surgery to have everything taken out under general anesthetic is booked for the 30th of this month. Even just the weight of my arm pushing the elbow into the mattress when in bed was hurting - I'd hate to think what pain I'd have knocking the pins against a wall or something.

Same here hope all goes well. Perhaps you could rig up some sort of cage/protection around it at zzzz time.

Hi folks, had all the metalwork removed on Monday afternoon. Long day as anticipated. To make sure I was there in time, I was walking to catch the first bus at 5:45am, home for 7pm the same day. Slightly disturbed sleep the first night but have been fine since. I've not really needed the pain killers.
I've been off work all week but will call in tomorrow to say hi. Obviously not as big an op as having the pins put in and I feel a lot better. Stitches are coming out on the 10th with no other check up needed. I can tell straight away the pin irritation has gone. A whole lot of flexibility and movement is still there - apart from the dressing/bandage limiting the range and the fact I know the elbow has been cut open again. I can't thank the Oxford Hospital staff enough, don't think I'll need any physio this time. Might even be back on the bike before Christmas!

First day back in work was fine - a couple of small pin prick/pain warnings if I was in danger of moving the arm too quick or pushing down too hard. I think that was the stitches. Fingertips are back to being 5 or 6 inches away from my shoulder - not sure how much of this is down to the dressing being tight or scar tissue about to form - I'm not going to go for records for a while.
If anyone has metalwork from a previous fracture and they think it needs removal - go for it.

Had the stitches out today - no bother at all. I can touch my shoulder - yes the dressing was causing apparent stiffness. The aches/pain relief is fantastic, and the extra elbow lumps are gone. I'll miss not being able to see the wire under the skin! Call me stupid and tell me it's wrong but I'm going to have a go cycling to work maybe next Weds. Stay safe out there folks. Edit. Did a gentle elbow wash and had a look myself in the mirror - they've missed one - it's tiny but still there. It'll dissolve in a while.

Well, guess what? I cycled in today, absolutely fine! No aches or pain this morning or on the way home.
I had thought about going out for 20mins last night to test the water so to speak. But after thinking about the improvements I've been feeling each day, decided to just go for it. I am pleased to be cycling so soon after the op and not feeling the irritation from the metalwork.
Once again thanks for all the messages. Stay safe folks.

Update, a strange thing is happening. The right elbow is fine, but, if I touch/scratch an area with my left hand, it feels like somewhere else is being touched! I can watch/feel where the fake sensations are! No dead places - just somewhere else. WTF!
