Hi Folks Heres a quandry, I have bought some SKS Race Blade Long removable mudguards. Main reason is that my wheels are 650C and much googling shows there is almost nothing available in mudguards (especially removable) for those wheels, yet these ones have an online guide to be able to adjust them to fit (GateauxVelo guide)
Anyways, couple of quandries:
1.
The variety of the metal clip fasteners that they come with, would you use the type with a hole through, or the type that is a U-shape on the end? I guess the hole is more secure, but the U-shape has a bit more scope to adjust. Any thoughts please?
Edited as I had my stupid-hat on.
2. This is the bigger question: I believe my bike has little threaded holes on the frame for rack or mudguards. So would you use these to mount the metal clip, or would you use the included option of putting the clip on the spindle of the wheel. Thing is, because I have to shorten the metal stays on these mudguards, I imagine that the length will differe on which moutning point I use so choosing right from the start is important. Putting on the threaded holes would be easier, quicker, saves me messing with the spindles which is all good, but they are a little bit more visible and thus a little more unsightly when the mudguards are off. Putting on the spindle looks much better, but looks a bit more fiddly, and also, apparently you need to remove the little springs that work with the quick release (otherwise the clip fouls the spring and the QR doesnt close fully) and I am slightly concerned about removing these little springs as surely they are a thing of purpose and must be doing some key job. If theyt are removed... then whats doing their job??
So the job of cutting down the metal rods looks straightforward, just trying to decide where to mount these before I start the process and so wondered if anyone had thoughts please?
Thanks for reading Alex

Hi Alex, I've had some raceblades fitted on my T3 since Christmas. By fitted I mean the brackets have been fitted on the brakes and QR skewers. The actual mudguard come on and off as needed.
Q1 - mine only came with the U shaped brackets. Never had an issue with them being insecure. Q2 - I kept the springs fitted on my skewers, never had a problem with the wheel feeling insecure after >1,500 miles.
Not sure if this will be an issue on your frame size but watch out for the small section on the rear mudguard rubbing against the back of the seat tube. Easily fixed with a small section of red electrical tape in the affected area.

Thanks folks Re Q1 ignore this now, I had my silly hat on. The U shaped brackets are the brake ones, the rounded ones are the ones for the skewers. Silly me, thats what I get for asking questions based on internet pics before the goods arrive through the post. Arrived now and I saw my mistake. Re Q2 thanks for the info Al thats good. Makes me think that if I go for skewer location, ill try leaving the springs in place to start with. Funny enough, the instructions on the back of the box show the springs being discarded but the sheet inside which is almost the same does not show them discarded. The youtube official vid also shows them discarded. Inconsistant huh. Still unsure whether to mount them on the little threaded bits on my frame, though I dont have any bolts to do that. Any other thoughts appreciated

Steph what guards you using? I'm not. Had cheap clip on things that I gave up with almost a year ago. Never bothered with anything else as decent ones were a) expensive (for me) and b) looked like a pain to fit with the smaller wheels.

Thanks for the rely Steph Im guessing you have 650 wheels like me too. This guide: gateauvelo.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/sks-race-blade-long-and-650c-wheels.htmlshows how to make the race blade longs fit 650's and doesnt look a bad process. Its even a Triban 3. Though for anyone wanting them, I have an email from SKS confirming they are discontinued as they are being redesigned for next/another season. So I decided the redesign might not be adaptable as easy to 650's and thus bought them before they dissapear (true the new ones coud be better, its a risk I took) Thanks Alex

Had the long blades last year, decent they were for the short time they lasted, kept the springs on the skewers, word of warning, don't lean the bike against a wall all the time, mine developed a crack and eventually fell apart, i still have the front guard for the T3, i then went and bought a rear (not SKS) guard so both will do for the winter

Agree with baz mine were good but fragile, rear one broke in two was resurrected thanks to duck tape.
After removing and re-fitting a few time last year almost all of the connecting parts were working loose.
They're not cheap, so a bit of a disappointment...

Thanks Baz & Robert, good to know. Shame that as the reviews tend to be excellent but i guess they dont review them over a long timescale. Ill try and treat mine gently and hope they survive Cheers

Spotted a crack in my rear raceblade long where the plastic U shaped bracket was situated for the stays. It was nearly cracked in two and I came across it on repairing a P******* earlier today. I checked in the recycling bin for any empty cans but alas there weren't any. Needs must, so I had to crack open a tinny of finest lager and emptied it into a glass before shaping up some curved splints cut from the can. I didn't quite cut them full width to allow for the U shaped bracket to slide on a bit easier. The splints went on above and below. I put two on the inner surface. The U shaped bracket slid over the splint with a bit of coaxing and it should do the job for the rest of the winter. I am now stuck with this glass of lager. Just wondering what to do with it..... hic.

I emailed SKS and they kindly sent a replacement free of charge. Didn't get any lager though

Cheers lowey I've just emailed the piccies to SKS to see what they have to say. It'll be interesting how they approach it as there was a product recall at one stage and are now discontinued. www.sks-germany.com/?l=en&a=news&i=128They are a functional set of mudguards for the near term though after the repair.

SKS are sending me the 4 sections of mudguards due to the crack on the rear and the defective clips. They said they need to wait until the rear section has come out of production. I presume even though they are now discontinued that they are having to produce more parts to satisfy warranty issues. The customer service has been first class. Thanks again.

Mine went the exact same way, not like me not to email and try to get a replacement but alas the rear guard was binned so no proof now.
