They pointed out on the log that he's travelling lighter than last year. Take away the sleeping back and it pretty muchlooks like kit for an all weathers day ride!!

Ultan Coyle is doing it on a TT bike. Earlier he was in the top 3 to reach the 40km gravel section. Looks like TT bikes aren't made for gravel. He's basically walked the entire 40km with slashed tyres, and the other 2 who he was near are now both halfway across Italy. Interesting. I heard them say last year they were trying to organise a route that would make people think twice about tri bars and then Coyle rolls up with a modified TT bike with aero luggage. Looks amazing but just not the ride for the Strade Bianche. Will he be able to make up lost time on the remainder though?

The guy who was first up Mt Ventoux had to scratch at the first CP because of a 'sun allergy'. Another guy this morning is out of the race and in hospital after being hit by a car. The guy who was in front of Josh until recently (and hence was 1st) had an unscheduled stop with a neck injury (I think it is called Sherman's neck) - not sure if he will carry on.

Thanks for the update. I don't have facebook so only have access to some of the later info. I had heard about Bernd Paul's sun allergy scratch (not a good combo that). Such a shame and he's clearly gutted after all that training. I noticed on James Hayden's track that he's had a long stop recently. I assumed he'd slept through his alarm as he was clearly surviving on minimal sleep up to then. That's a real shame too as he and Josh Ibbett looked like they had a good race on.

KiwiBeard: Any idea why Josh Ibbett's tracker suggests he's just doubled back on himself?

Where are you getting this info from Kiwi? I would like to find out more about this incredible event but my antivirus doesn't like the look of the official web site. I know its on Facebook but I am not on that.

phred1812 unfortunately Facebook, Twitter and official website are best for race information. The official website does have a blog but its not updated daily. Tracking map here trackleaders.com/transconrace15f

Looks like James Hayden is closing in fast. Hope his neck is holding up. EDIT: Looks like it might have been a navigational blip by Josh as he's now heading toward Lovcen on a different road. Curious.

The event deserves better media coverage imho.

And what's with the guys going down the Dalmatian Coast after (I assume) taking the ferry across to Split? Did they forget about the control at Vukovar? Even curiouser!

ChrisD, Rider 29 is a friend, he planned to go to control 4 then to control 3, then through Serbia, Bulgaria onto Turkey. This route is slightly flatter and avoids Albania which is hell on earth for cyclists - wild dogs and lack of real roads. According to rules controls can be completed in any particular order.

Apparently there is no specific order you need to do the CPs in. So by taking the ferry to Split and then going down the coast to Kotor, before heading back up to Vukavar, then you in theory get a better (ie flatter) run into Istanbul. I think it is about minimising elevation.

KiwiBeard: Any idea why Josh Ibbett's tracker suggests he's just doubled back on himself? apparently the road he was on turned into 'unpaved', so he turned around looking for a better road.
