Checked the live map this morning and thought it's odd that Allegaert looks closer to the 2nd and 3rd place riders than I was expecting. A little digging revealed that he was penalised for taking a ferry across the mouth of the bay to Kotor in the lead up to the third control point in Montenegro. It seems, despite being annoyed that his nautical route was considered off limits, he took the initiative to suggest the same penalty that the race controllers were minded to impose and simply got straight back on his bike to ride all the way round the bay and up the mountain (again) to the control point, all in 36 degree heat and with the loss of 5 hours on his competitors. Seems odd based on the variety of routes the riders are taking since they left the Alps, but I guess it must be in the small print somewhere. Harsh business this Enduroracing lark!
Looks like race control are positioned to prevent the 2nd place rider doing the same thing as he approaches the bay.

The rules say something like self propelled only, with the exception of specific ferry crossings. Its interesting to see the pack split with a lot of sensible people going down to Ancona and then getting the ferry to Split, whereas the lead bunch all cycled down through Slovenia, etc.

Clearly stated in the rules which ferries are legal - someone linked this pic on the fb page.

You joke but there's no reason why anyone on a Triban couldn't, in fact with pannier rack and decent wheels / heavy duty tyres, it's a seriously robust light tourer.

I see the tail enders are hanging out in Paris - good on them, I imagine they're enjoying themselves, doing a leisurely spell, then stop for a spot of lunch, then another little amble in the afternoon, find a hotel for the evening, carrying on at their own pace, stylish. All this sleeping just 2 or 3 hrs on roadsides is far too rough for my liking .

If you can cycle from London to Dover on it, then surely you can cycle to Paris. And if you can cycle to Paris, then surely you can cycle to Switzerland. And if you can cycle to Switzerland, then surely you can cycle to Stelvio Pass. And if you can cycle to Stelvio Pass, then surely you can cycle to Montenegro. And if you can cycle to Montenegro, then surely you can cycle to Istanbul. See? Easy.

It would help if you're a good mech, whatever bike you're on - should be able to find parts anywhere across Europe.

I have a friend of a friend who I've met a couple of times in the race I've been tracking, he's number 7 (Nick Dodd). It looks like he's taking a "non-standard" route to the Stelvio. Allegaert is a machine, he's only been stopped for 8hrs 22 since 08:00 on Saturday. How do you know Dudd then?! I am also rooting for #7, in the hope that he gets further than last time, the lazy batard

Interesting situation brewing up for the women with the two leading ladies taking contrasting routes down the Adriatic.
