Hi thanks again for the reply's truly grateful - I wrote to absolutecycles about there Continental Gatorskin Road Bike Tyres 700 x 25c (A PAIR and using them on a good to fair canal path and this was his reply{ Hi these are very durable tyres much tougher than most tyres out there but they are not designed for that purpose. They should be ok on smooth path but obviously you'd have to be careful} which still has not made my mind up lol am I using the wrong bike for canal and road travel I certainly hope not because I love my B Twin, best wishes Brian. The tread on those hutchinsons looks pretty good for a 'road' tyre. I use Vittoria Zaffiro's www.decathlon.co.uk/zaffiro-road-bike-tyre-700x23-black-id_8242766.html as an everyday 'training' tyre, they don't have any specific P******* protection but are pretty tough. I think you will get cuts in any tyre, and at this price you don't have to think too much about replacing it when you do. I agree there may be much more expensive grippier tyres, but you ride accordingly and I guess if you're using towpaths you're not in a huge hurry. A wider tyre would be better for the paths, but you're limited by the brake clearance, your B'twin may not be the fastest bike on towpaths but it's not wrong, take your time and you'll be fine. Hi thanks very much, and you are right I am certainly not in any hurry as I like to see as much as possible between home and my final destination so I really do go very steady and if the going gets rough I walk her and miss most of the grit and large stones but thanks to all as at least I get some idea what others are using, and I sure would hate to cut out the beautiful canal trails very best wishes Brian.

I hate to say it but yes you have the wrong bike. You have a road bike which are for roads. Yes you could get away with it if your careful but at the end of the day its not meant for off road use.

Hi thanks for your reply and I do truly understand that my B Twin sport 1 is a road bike and one does have to except the limitations of such a bike but believe you me I would carry her before I subjected her to really rough terrain and I know I am trying to convince myself all is ok but I do feel that a lot of the canals have a really good towpath and here in stoke on trent they are superb with a lot more funds shortly to be invested, I presume that British Waterways maintain the canals and if so really do need a pat on the back, thanks very much for your input my friend best wishes Brian.

Hi Chris D thank you very much for your reply and advice and I certainly will take it easy I use the canal towpath and then sometimes I have to travel on the road and meet back up with the towpath and I can travel quite a few miles like this in and out of beautiful countryside meeting other cyclists and other folk fishing in the canal and I am quite sure it does not come any better than this and my B Twin makes it possible to travel the roads at a good pace and then back to the towpaths for a leisurely stroll, but still I would not want to damage my bike, but I have to agree to take care and go steady should be ok. very best wishes Brian.

Not having seen a real Sport 1, what's the clearance like? could you fit cyclocross tyres on? And if you do, will the bike stand it when things get muddy?

Hi the gears are 17cm at the lowest point and the lowest point of the frame is 25.4 centimetres so that's a fair bit of clearance but not sure if I could fit cyclocross tyres but I would doubt it ps the measurements are taken from ground to underside of chain set and ground to lowest point of frame ,best wishes Brian.

Is that the Trent and Mersey Brian? Those paths look in good condition to me; better than one of the cycle paths I sometimes ride on my T3 with 23c tyres.

Picked up a pair of Vittoria Rubino Pro 3 from Merlin for £32.50. Still to try them, just about to hit a 1000 miles on my original B'Twin tyres so no need to swap over yet. I'm actually just going to put them on my new wheels once I get a cassette and chain sorted soon.

Hi Chris_D you are quite right my friend they are indeed the Trent and Mersey canal and they are not bad to ride as you can see but still a little care does not go a miss as there is quite a few small animals scuttling about first thing in a morning whilst I am on my way to work on my electric bike and the rabbits tend to dart in front of me lol good to see though wildlife and cyclists all moving amongst each other, best wishes Brian.

Those paths look better than some of the roads around me. This, round these parts I'd call that prime tarmac.
