Hi I have a B Twin sport 1 cycle with the standard Hutchinson tyres fitted which I think are pretty good as I have had no problems up to now, but wonder if I should fit a Tyre that may be good for road use and canal tow path as the tow paths in my area are not to bad in places but just wondering if I should use a different type of tyre with using the canal best wishes Brian.

I used a canal towpath in Bath yesterday. Most of it was rough gravel. I'd imagine thin road tyres will cut up badly on those kind on surfaces. It certainly left the bike filthy. Spent a while at the camp site cleaning it all off.
It will be a while before I have the urge to go barge spotting again.

I've had 23c Hutchinson Atoms on my T3 for some time and occasionally find myself taking the odd tow path, gravel path, ridiculously rough cycle path and even MTB tracks in the New Forest and they've coped very well with my ample frame and the gravel etc. I'm switching to Rubino Pro Slicks only because I had an enforced skid that wore the rear tyre down to the webbing the other day (bag caught in the rear well) and the Rubino Pros were available on a better offer from Deca than the Hutch Atoms.

Continental Grand Prix 4 Season 25s for me. Had a set of Shwalbe Luganos once but I am right happy with the Continentals.

But they don't p******ture...yet! You're gonna regret that lol.
I have 25 Continental 4000s on my bike. Quite expensive but I am very pleased with them.

in the past, my approach to tyres changed in few seconds: me: "Hallo, I'd like to change the tyres with something cheap." mecca: "remember [young Skywalker] that those 4 cm are the only contact points between you, your bike and the ground..." me: "where are my Michelin Pro Service Course? "

Hi thanks again for the reply's truly grateful - I wrote to absolutecycles about there Continental Gatorskin Road Bike Tyres 700 x 25c (A PAIR and using them on a good to fair canal path and this was his reply{ Hi these are very durable tyres much tougher than most tyres out there but they are not designed for that purpose. They should be ok on smooth path but obviously you'd have to be careful} which still has not made my mind up lol am I using the wrong bike for canal and road travel I certainly hope not because I love my B Twin, best wishes Brian.

Continental GP4000s in a 25 for me on mavic aksiums. Huge improvement on T5 standard, but they will be back on for the bad weather. Edited to add : I have just re-read the opening post and realise that my contribution in no way addresses the question - apologies for the useless info I shared above

The tread on those hutchinsons looks pretty good for a 'road' tyre. I use Vittoria Zaffiro's www.decathlon.co.uk/zaffiro-road-bike-tyre-700x23-black-id_8242766.html as an everyday 'training' tyre, they don't have any specific puncture protection but are pretty tough. I think you will get cuts in any tyre, and at this price you don't have to think too much about replacing it when you do. I agree there may be much more expensive grippier tyres, but you ride accordingly and I guess if you're using towpaths you're not in a huge hurry. A wider tyre would be better for the paths, but you're limited by the brake clearance, your B'twin may not be the fastest bike on towpaths but it's not wrong, take your time and you'll be fine.
