The other widely touted 'problem' with discs is the huge amounts of heat they generate. On a long hairpin riddled descent the discs can reach a few hundred degrees. Imagine red hots sheets of metal amongst a pile of bodies in a crash. No thanks. I think they are cool though.

Isn't weight a key reason they're popular on MTBs but not on road bikes? They've been UCI compliant for a season or two now I believe.

Positive write-up for the Alur in this months Cycling Active, top alu/carbon bike in test sample of four for under a grand.

Hi, I have registered for this forum, as I'm also planning to purchase the bike. Today I had the chance so see it in real life for the very first time, even if not at the size I require (L instead of S). The bike looks superb, except for the handlebar tape which looked like wrapped by somebody who was doing this for the very first time. Especially around the brakes the taping was a real shame for a bike looking that great in all other places. Never the less as soon as the bike will be available in size S it will be mine

The tape may be because the bike arrived with the brakes the continental way and the person in the shop has had to swap them over

Not exactly confidence inspiring in the mechanics though.

Giant Defy 3, Saracen Tenet 2 and Specialized Secteur sport triple complete the test.

ChrisD, Others; Giant Defy 3 Spec Secteur Sport Triple Saracen Tenet Re; Brakes, inconclusive. Actually they felt they're slightly less effective, but they're requesting reader contributions to confirm that opinion.

No ChrisD, buy your own magazine! ;-) It's the only one I buy, well subcribe to. If only I could get used to the finish on the 700 it would be on my shopping wish list.

On the Alur front, for me it raises the question of why buy another Alu/Carbon when I have the original and best? And it's red! A group set upgrade to 105 is the way for me I think, but not hhis year.

Sound philosophy, pretty much my thoughts, except I went for the Tiagra deal as 105 10 is not much different and most recently replaced Aksiums with Fulcrum 5's for summer use - a track bike also beckons and there's winter to get through. I view these things as a balance of performance, functionality, longevity and aesthetics but if I was sat here with a worn out bike, it would be a different thing entirely.
