Hi all. Got my T3 last week, have only really had chance to go out the once cos I've been away. It felt great, and I really enjoyed my first proper drop handlebar road bike experience. My only criticism would be that the gears weren't quite as smooth as I would have liked (even tho I did take them back to Decathlon for tweaking there still seems to be quite a narrow band without rattling) and the pedals (but I'd already kind of expected that).
My question is, with all the talk on this forum about how this bit needs upgrading, that bit needs upgrading, etc, if I were to go back and trade up for the T5 before I've put too many miles on the 3 (I've done the sums and could just about afford to do this and shell out for some pedals and shoes I've been recommended elsewhere) would this...
a) make any big difference to the gears and ride experience in general?
b) mean fewer 'essential' tweaks?
In short, in laymans terms, could somebody please explain what are the differences between the 3 and 5 and are they worth the extra Β£130?
Thanks in advance, look forward to hearing your advice.

There have been several threads about this. Here are links to 2 of them: triban3owners.freeforums.net/thread/1337/3-5atriban3owners.freeforums.net/thread/818/triban-3-5For me it has to be the T3 red, as much for the cult status it's acquired as for the great spec for the money. A bit irrational I know. You'll see lots of advice on T3 upgrades here such as wheels, cassette, pedals in the technical section. PS - Like you I initially had gear issues. I still can't select as many as I would like noise free, but part of the problem was a poorly adjusted rear derailleur. A turn or two on the barrel adjuster sorted it and now things aren't bad.

I had read those threads, and they left me more confused tbh. I need actual laymans terms, 'sora groupset' means nothing to me. Does this mean my forum membership will be revoked? :-)

Rad is pretty strict on numbskullosity . If it's any consolation I was the same a few months ago, but as you become more familiar with the terms and read the various threads you should get to understand them fairly quickly.

Is it a red or white T3 you have?

The main difference then would just be having the 2013 Sora so might run a bit better and you don't have any thumb shifters like on the T3. Wheels/brakes/etc are still worthwhile upgrading on the T5 so you'd probably be best saving the money on upgrading to a T5 and use that to get more upgrades for your T3, unless you don't wan't the thumb shifters.
Had the red T3 still been available I think I would have found it quite hard to justify the extra money on the T5 although I do love it

The only real difference between the two is the groupset, i'm not sure you would notice a massive difference between the two to be perfectly honest.

Stevo speaks sense. I am a tolerant fellow really Fred, I didn't answer as I thought someone else should stand up and speak. Think it's a case of for half the price of say a Defy 4, you get to learn road riding and bike geekness without breaking the bank - we'll all move onto comparing next year's offerings and there's going to be a different perspective again in 2014. Some will step up to new bikes, some will step in to equivalent offerings, some will stay still and some will drop out - it's the circle, the circle of life .

Thanks all. That's cool - unless someone comes up with a killer argument then, I think I'll stick with my red one. It's funny, but I kinda dig the 'cult status' thing too. Think my first change will be the pedals, guess ill be back here soon enough for further upgrade advice ( general consensus around the forums would seem to be wheels, but as they're just round things that roll to me at the moment I figure I've got a way to go til I'm in that zone).

Hi all just got back from Lands End to watch my brothers lad cross the finish line on his End 2 End ride, 1029 miles completed by a group of 17 - 20 year olds, doing there gold D of E. Ride completed in 14 days.
Just to let you know two of the bikes were red T3s. No up grades apart from new tyres. both bikes completed the 1029 miles with out any problems.
Bring on the REDS

I think you're doing the right thing. As stevo said, the only significant difference is the groupset , and as you're just starting your road 'career' you probably wouldn't notice the difference. The wheels on the T5 are also poor, so if you're unhappy with the T3 wheels getting the T5 won't solve that problem. Personally I would rather have a T3 red with, say, new Shimano r501 wheels for Β£70 the pair than a T5, and you're still 60 squid to the good. I have no plans to upgrade anything till next year, maybe not until much later when things start to wear out. For me the bike is plenty quick enough as it is. The only thing slowing it down is me. This is a bit childish, but another thing that's spurring me on is I recently did a guest ride at a local club. My aim is to progress to the higher levels and match or beat the guys and gals on their multi thousand pound bikes. I like the idea of doing that on a Β£300 bike. PS - Obviously one thing you will have to replace at some point is the tyres. I like the look of these: www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/TYVTRBS3WT/vittoria_rubino_slick_3_wired_tyre

Yeah, those tyres look pretty cool. Anyone tried em? I was considering Gatorskins cos I'm a bit puncture-prone (I blame the state of Sheffield roads) but these are way cheaper. And they've got red on. Which matters. ;-)
