I use Shimano R088 SPD-SL shoes, red cleats and the Welgo pedals that came with the bike. I know next to nothing about how to properly use / adjust SPD-SL pedals so they're left on the adjustments they had when I bought the bike... I guess I should read up on them but I'm too lazy

I have got a third option which seems to fall between the two options given in the poll. It is the touring option. I have got Shimano A520 SPD pedals and Shimano RT32 Touring shoes. These look and behave more like road shoes but with the MTB SPD cleats. The pedals are wider then standard MTB pedals. My normal rides are usually 15-25 miles but I have done 2 x 100Km rides with no problem in the shoe/pedal department. I feel this solution gives the best of both worlds.

MTB anything on a road bike is a compromise which is OK but if you want the max you need the right gear As rad hinted at, how many of the GC riders are on spd? Funnily enough, I was commenting to Mrs Slog the other day that I hadn't seen many T3s being ridden in the TDF either.

I would like to see a pro race where they had to ride 100 mile on a sub £600 bike as it comes off the shelf.....and they have to fix everything themselves

How do we vote? I recently opted for the SPD M324 pedals (normal pedal on one side) as I liked the flexibility to just jump on the bike for work without having to put the shoes on. Went with MTB (recessed cleats) as wanted the extra ease of walking etc, though the white pair I got do look more like road shoes - www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-m10-mountain-bike-cycling-shoe/Generally I like them, only had one near miss of "failing to unclip". Can really feel the advantage when accelerating or climbing. I find them easy to clip in and out though, and if I want a quick getaway (eg from the traffic lights) I can just use the flat side of the pedals. Not tried SPD SLs so can't really comment. I'm not that convinced they have made me noticeably faster though. In fact I did my fastest run last night on a regular 6mile route of mine in just a pair of trainers on the flat sides!

My 10 pence worth to the fray. I have been using spd-sl since March and really don't like them. I rather my SPD any time of day. Just so much easier and safer. I am not changing though.

I just bought my first set of clipless shoes\pedals. I went for the BTwin road bike shoes from Decathlon and was told they would only fit the mountain bike BTwin or Shimano pedals even though they are for road bikes. The guy suggested these with me being a newbie as he said they are easiest to get out of until you get your confidence up. He also guaranteed that I would fall over at some point, so I'm looking forward to that. Here's to the future bruises.
