I couldn't have asked for a better explanation than that mate, so basically if you're gonna get serious about cycling then road shoes are worth serious consideration. Sounds good to me.

And as an added plus, from what i've seen online road shoes generally look a lot cooler, better shape to them!!

Look is one thing but I just feel right in them ... when you become more adapted and accustomed to riding, every little nuance begins to take on more significance. I am definitely getting a bit OCD about it; when on the bike, things must be spot on ... the clothing, the bike set up etc., even the tools and kit suited to the ride type; if something needs a tweak or clean / tlc, then it grates with my psyche ... it's a kind of madness but at least it makes me fitter lol !

I think that just shows your love for the bike and cycling, gonna take me a long time to figure it all out and what's best for myself. It seems like a good thing to be involved in though, can see a lot of spare time being taken up which would normally be spent wasted on the couch in front of the tv.

Simple answer though - Exustar (Look / Keo) pedals, dhb Carbon shoes. Hey Rad, how does that combo work out? Was thinking of getting some Exustar pedals and the dhb shoes are on sale.

I say both, or either. I dont think anyone could actually say with any real evidence that one is better than the other, it depends on the person. I was going to swap my SPDs over and put my KEOs on the other day for a long ride, but got lazy and didn't bother, also partly because I had just put new cleats on for the track and they looked to pretty to scruff up.
However my road shoes are much cooler in the summer compared to the MTB

I don't think evidence is an issue, we could survey the pro peleton? I do believe it's difficult to dispute that generally across the options there is more stiffness available in a road set up, you know this just by riding them back to back, whether this is what you require or need is an issue only for the individual to decide on though - which is the 'better' choice is subjective. If you don't suffer from tendon issues and want flexibility of movement on and off the bike then MTB makes more sense. I have been careful to state my preference for road is IMO. The set up for me is perfect ohoward, the road cleats take a bit more conscious effort to get in and out of but once you're in they're great. I almost had a 'moment' when out with BA. Do be aware that there is more risk of that happening.

I find them fine but reviews on the internet slate them and I have had a couple of incidents with them (although not sure if that's a case of them or me). Are the Exustars reviewed well or would I be better of just getting Look Classics?

The cleats were reviewed ok but they're my first road cleat experience so you'll be able to suss as well as I can. I do feel I've been lucky with the shoe fit as they were mail order but spot on for me, I would need to visit somewhere to try things on to be able to say more. The pedals are good value, fine in use but I do imagine other options might be easier to clip into - don't know for certain though.

I have SPD cleats on road shoes (sports direct) and use Shimano M505 pedals which are double sided. I had these on my old bike, and when i got the T3 I just bought another pair. Never had any problems with them.
I read somewhere that a bit of 'float' is a useful thing, and this is one of the factors I looked for when i bought.
They came with platforms which clip into the pedal so that you can use them with ordinary shoes, not something I've ever done with the T3, but have used on the old bike on occasions (such as when all the local roads were gridlocked and didn't fancy 'tap dancing' around the chip shop).
I've considered changing to a more road based pedal, mainly for the ease of clipping in. Eldest son doesn't appear to have the difficulties i sometimes face in trying to find the pedal, despite the fact that I have either side of the pedal to engage into.

I've only used mtb shoes with mtb clipless pedals by now on my mtb bikes but I'm gonna give a go to road pedals and shoes on my triban, they seem to be lighter and you don't get ventilated soles on mtb shoes, let's see how it works out...

Road shoes s the only way to go MTB shoes aren't as stiff in e sole and you will begin to experience pain on the outer part of your foot with a few miles under your belt Road shoes are far better for climbing, road pedals lock you in far more securely so you can give it beans with confidence MTB anything on a road bike is a compromise which is OK but if you want the max you need the right gear As rad hinted at, how many of the GC riders are on spd? And why do you think they use systems that lock you in more securely? The larger platform created by road shoes/PEDs enables a far better power transfer on both the up and downstrokes Lastly, road PEDs for road bikes, its in the goddamn rules! Lol
