Hi, first post! I am getting a Triban 5a as soon as my cycle to work certificate arrives. One thing I have picked up is that the wheels/tyres on Tribans seem to be a weak link. I am not too fussed by the weight as this is all for pleasure. However, I do want to spend all my time on the bike and a minimal time repairing punctures.
Any advice from you knowledgeable bunch who seem to know how to get the best from a bargain price would be very welcome.
Thanks

Go and get some inner tubes with SLIME in them - then just ride it till you feel like upgrading anything else.

That sounds a good plan. Is slime very effective? Does it last for long? Thanks

Personally I wouldn't use slime but that's just me.

Personally I wouldn't use slime but that's just me. Me neither - it's hard enough to keep the wheels turning without the extra weight penalty of Slime in the tubes.

I just joined last week and asked about upgrades, someone on here mentioned gatorskins and rubinos so they may be two worth checking out, but don't quote me on that i'm just passing on information mate i'd do a wee internet search to back that up.

I've had my T5a for three months and have done 1100 miles on the original wheels & tyres. I've had no problems apart from one puncture in the back type due to a large nail. The wheels seem true. I've no complaints and won't be upgrading anything until there's a major failure. Then again, I know nothing about bikes so maybe ignorance is bliss and I don't know what I'm missing!

I must admit its been a heavy discussion with the Mrs just to get the bike. I think I will take the ignorance is bliss route for now as its all about me(!) and feeling good and fit. I do reserve the right to change this opinion in a year after being on a T5 and try to shave off miniscule amounts weight off the bike and add expensive items!! In the meantime while the CTW certificate is being prepped its me on my old free Ridgeback MTB weighing about a tonne!

The weathers great but I went out earlier to conquer a local hill and had to stop. 15 seconds the on again. Can't help wondering what it will be like on the T5!

Vittoria Rubinos look good at around Β£10 from Ribbles (if you order over Β£35). They are Β£12 with Wiggle. I've done about 500 miles on the Rubinos so maybe too early to tell but no probs so far and they are also wearing well. The stock tyres looked pretty done in (the rear one especially) after only about 300miles! Wouldn't bother with slime, you just end up going overdue on wornout tyres and in my experience punctures are more often than not a sign of worn out tyres. Make sure you keep them inflated to around 80% or more of the maximum pressure and you'll avoid a lot of punctures anyway. I used to run cheapo Wilkinsons tyres (at Β£5 a pop a few years ago) on my hybrid commuter bike and I only ever got punctures when the tyres were pretty worn out. Always kept them well pumped up.
