Following on from the discussion on the "What have you bought?" thread, anyone wanting to make their own Ass Saver mudguard can follow these make your own instructions. Thanks goes to trotter for finding the template. 1. Download the template, print off on an A4 sheet of paper and cut out the Ass Saver. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1349040/SmartAss_template.pdf2. Obtain a suitable material. I bought a 2 pack flexible chopping mats for 79p from Home Bargains. It comes in Triban Red and Clear 3. Using the template cut the shape required and bend on the dotted lines. 4. Fit to the bike 5. Stow it away for a rainy day. 6. Make some more for spares. Each sheet will produce 3 or 4 Ass Savers.

Nice one!
Not sure if it will fit mine though due to the saddle bag, but I'll have a look.

One "Home Bargains" flexible chopping sheet will definitely produce 4 Ass Savers, so that is 8 Ass Savers per pack. We have 3 x Red Tribans in the family so I've done 4 in Triban Red. Dad's got a spare.

Excellent, just been to home bargains at lunch time, will have to go again tomorrow.
Spotted these in a pro race last month, great idea but had never seen them before.

Lars Bak uses something similar when the weather turns grotty. Considering he rode both Terrino and the Giro it got a real work out.

This has got to be one up for a 'Thread of the year award', what are you going to do next, a new SRAM cassette from tin foil and a cardboard box Let me know if this really saves your ass and I will have to make one. My OH will not believe the cost-saving measures, after ordering all of my upgrade bits & bobs for my T3.

Well done dave ..... You've done a good job on that one.
I just made one as well, but it's not as good as that as it was out of a big cheap plastic water bottle from morrisons.
I thought it was going to be rubbish until I put the folds in it which strengthened it up a bit.
I'm not sure I have a home bargains store around here.... Any idea where else I can get these flexible and chopping mats?
It also seemed like I could make it a little longer and wider. May be worth an experiment.

I think they have it bob on design wise, Trotski. Any longer or wider and it will not store under the saddle. If you look at the shot from above you cannot see the wheel which probably means that it has full coverage anyway.
I'll nip to Home Bargains tomorrow and knock you one up if you want, mate. Just message me your address and I'll post it off.

I tried making a concept model today using some laminate sheets which I pre-hardened in a laminator. Had to use four sheets to get something decently rigid.
Folding it mucked it up a bit though.......

Looks a bit smarter now. :-) You are probably right about the dimensions..... They probably got it up to max size before problems occurred during testing. . It was kind of them to post up a template.... I reckon it would have been a lot of faffing to get that sweet spot size. Cheers again dave.

Can't wait for it to rain now.
