www.decathlon.co.uk/p/ultra-cf-105-road-bike-black/_/R-p-301046Hi all, thinking about treating myself to a new road bike soon and this caught my eye. Budget is higher if needed and want a race/aero type bike rather than all day endurance bike. More than happy with 105 (if fact rather 105 than Ultegra since parts cheaper to replace and can't tell difference except price!). Would prefer rim brakes since have several sets of nice wheels I can use rather than disc brakes where I have no other wheels! Unfortunately seems harder and harder to buy higher spec rim brake bikes now!!! Anyway, any reviews of this bike? Anyone got one? Any other suggestions? Budget stretch to Β£2,000. Other options might be Ribble Aero 883 or Planet X EC130 (aero bike).

Tough call Rob. Canyon launched their new Aeroad yesterday but it's disc brake only and the cheapest version is silly money. Karen wants one but it no longer represents good value in our view. The Van Rysel you mention seems terrific value but it's not an aero frame and the wheels are so-so. Bide your time as even if you bought something tomorrow I doubt it would get much use before next March. Happy hunting.

Totally agree. Canyon are EXPENSIVE! In no hurry to by and likely wait until new year unless see v good deal....if I was starting from scratch then I'd get hydro discs simply as thats all anyone seems to sell now! But im not fussed about discs at all and have coupke pairs of nice rim wheels!

I went down the 940CF Di2 route - Its awesome. The only thing I've changed on it is the cassette and chain rings. I'd been flirting with Absolute Black oval rings and needed extra climbing gears to drag my large frame up hills. Its so light, comfortable and responsive.
It is more of a pleasure to ride than the 105 Mach 720 that I had before and LOVED. That, was infinitely better than the T5A which went before. I'm much faster on it (or rather, I was) but I was searching for comfort and distance rather than shortish duration speed.
The Cosmic wheels were awesome (great for acceleration and hill climbing) although I eventually burned them out in the 'Struggle' - a really tough wet sportive in Yorks. For that reason I will never buy rim brakes again.
I flirted with a more expensive BMC in Tenerife and couldn't find anything better on it!
But, I paid the price you are considering for the 105 version, not Β£3k - I took a chance and bought it new (still in protective wrapping) from a private seller and things worked out.

Anyone got any experience of planet x ec130 or giant propel or giant tcr? The giants would be rim brake lowest spec versions - about 1800 for tcr and 2000 for propel.

I have friends that have these bikes (PlanetX and Giant TCR). Both of them love them and rave how good they are particularly the PlanetX. Saying that the Giant TCR always gets great reviews. Probably no help at all but I have considered the PlanetX

If you have got some good wheels you could put them on and either sell or keep the Aksiums for backup. I have the aluminium frame version of this and never found rim brake Shimano 105 wanting. The only advantage of disc is they stop better in the wet but would you really be riding this in crap weather? It comes in at a good weight and if you have some nice light wheels that will make it even livelier.

Hi all Realise this thread is from last year but I've been toying with the idea of a new bike for a while now (never jump into things quickly!) and this one caught my eye. I've saved up and thought I may as well treat myself. I'd continue to use the 500SE in winter and the new one in the warmer months. It's out of stock on the website and I never understood the Decathlon model cycle so not sure if it's due to be replaced or it's genuinely out of stock at the moment. Price wise it's right for me and I've still got a soft spot for Decathlon after all these fantastic years with the 500SE. I like the colour scheme - simple and classic look. Following on from Robert's original post does anyone know anyone who got one and what they think of it? chas would you be able to let me know what the stock situation is with this bike and is it due to be replaced?

The 105 model is showing no stock anywhere and no date for availability, it shows as a current model though and there are other versions available now. There is a newer model, the EDR but AFAIK both ranges will be available at least for the time being. There is a shortage of components, particularly 105 which has been/will continue to affect all manufacturers for some time to come. I've just treated myself to an Orro Terra c and it's taken all year to get hold of one.

I've said my bit about the Ultra 940CF Di2. I stand by it. But my crash changed me and I didn't feel comfortable riding downhill with rim brakes afterwards. I ended up buying a Dolan Ares which is awesome, but nowhere near as good up hills as the lighter Ultra.
Note: The EDR wasn't available when I ordered the Ares. Also, the Ares came with a much better spec.

Just an update on my post above. With the Decathlon bike I wanted seemingly permanently out of stock (as seems to be the case with a lot of bike makers) I eventually went for the Canyon CF SL7 which was back in stock after a few months and which arrived to me on Monday. Carbon frame with 105.
I'll still use the 500SE in poorer weather/Winter but I'm also looking forward to getting out on the new Canyon and hoping I get as much enjoyment out of it as the Triban.
