Hi all, Looking at getting a winter bike but what to get? I thought perhaps the Ribble 7005 Audax would be perfect - after all it has a robust frame, good groupset, and comes with mudguards - however, it only accepts 23mm tyres which is a bit hard going for a bike in 2017 in my opinion. So I guess what I'm looking for is something that has good clearance for at least 25mm tyres with mudguards. Not too bothered about disc brakes although they'd be nice at the right price (budget Β£900 or less). Tiagra is fine for a winter bike. 9 to 9.5kg would be a good weight although lighter is nicer of course. Any suggestions, guys and girls? Joe

I have made my T5 my winter bike for the last 3-4 years. You can make 25mm Schwalbe Luganos and Crud IIs work if you try very hard.
That would then free you up for a new summer bike instead.
For the end of the market you are looking at I don't think you can beat a BTwin

Would ideally like something that can easily handle 25s or 28s (plus mudguards) for a bit of comfort putting in the winter miles. Summer bike sorted already, don't think I'd be allowed a second summer bike! You're right, it's hard to beat B'Twin for value.

520 takes 28s and guards, cartridge bearing wheels, new Sora is really nice plus cheap to maintain. Only reason not to get one is if you want disc brakes.

Still looking and the more I look, the more there appears to be! Cheap winter bikes are pretty similar to commuter bikes to be honest - I suppose some commuters might also look for rack mounts as well but there are many more similarities than differences. Anyway, with thanks to chas, new list! Triban 520 Triban 540 Genesis Delta 20 Specialized Allez Elite Tiagra It's hard to see past the Tribans! They're great value for money, competitive on weight with other bikes of similar spec and utility, and arguably have the best frame clearance this side of an out-and-out adventure/gravel/CX bike. The Genesis seems quite nice too, it's on offer at the moment at Tweek - our club has quite a few Genesis riders in it, and not one of them has any complaints which to me speaks volumes for a brand. The Specialized also seems to be OK, and (I think) the lightest of the bunch, although not quite as competitively priced as the others. Another trip to Southampton Decathlon is on the cards I think!
