The amount of near misses I have had recently has got me thinking about the use of action cameras such as the Go Pro etc. When I see a cyclist with one mounted on top of their helmet I think it looks so naff and although I do have a Go Pro clone at home I have never worn it when cycling. I can see the common sense in using a camera. If a motorist inflicts serious injuries due to reckless driving and long term health issues ensue, then the evidence would be useful in the resultant litigation. Does anyone use one or would you consider wearing a camera?

I don't use one as I think similarly. I do also slightly worry about the safety aspect of having something fixed to a helmet that could potentially penetrate my skull.
I liked the idea of the Fly 6 which incorporated a rear light with a rear camera. If there was something similar for the front light too that would be good (I've just discovered the Fly12 which is a 400 lumen light/camera). I have no interest in videoing rides and watching them back other than if I were in an accident and want to prove to a jury what happened. But combining cameras with items I 'need' on the bike seems sensible.
Having said that, I'm not prepared to pay £100+ for a rear light nor £275 for a 400 lumen front light!

Not sure it is worth it really. Won't stop you getting knocked off or save you any damage. I think the people going round filming and posting on Youtube serve to antagonise drivers. The situation seems to be getting worse everywhere at the moment sadly.

My intended use would be for video evidence if I was seriously injured by a third party. There are far more accidents on the roads than there ever used to be, people drive more aggressively, people are more dishonest and are less caring of others.
It would be worth it to my family if for example I was crippled in an accident and the evidence gained helped to secure funding for my future care. Now you might say such serious injuries are rare but I do know one mate who was a keen cyclist until recently and is now confined to a wheelchair.
Some of the videos that are posted up on news channels of accidents and near misses actually do go to highlight the poor standard and sometimes aggressive nature of road users these days and are useful evidence in campaigns to make our roads safer for all.
Cyclists who antagonise drivers and visa versa is another matter and I fully agree such behaviour just inflames matters. Some sections of the media lap it up and they are just as bad as the antagonists.
I probably won't end up using it but it certainly would make sense to do so.

It will save/recover damage as it is evidence of any collision and will help your case. £50 on a camera or £50 on a new jersey. I know where my money will go. I agree with the fact that It will not stop anything.

I used a cheap GoPro copy for a while but the issue is battery life, you only get about 1hr 20 if that. I've just to the Fly12 and Fly6. Fly12 is for the front and this has lasted all ride on the last 2 6 hours rides. The Fly6 is for the back, this is claimed to be a 6 hour battery life but again this has lasted the full 6 hours.
Footage isn't GoPro quality but it's good enough to read number plates etc. I had a guy pull in front of me at some lights and go mad with his horn last week, this got me thinking did i go too early, were the lights on green? Checked when i got home and i was right, he was in the wrong. (You call also clearly here me shout "they're on green di*k head")

The missus surprised me with a GoPro for my brithday.
I think it was more of an impulse buy on her part rather than thinking about the safety aspect of it. Plus with about 1hr40 battery life, its not going to be effective on that part anyway given that I am usually cycling for longer than that, and at night which may make it even less useful).

Just bought the Cycliq Fly6 & 12, front and rear light, camera combo. The footage is impressive, battery life has survived the few rides I've done so far, most recent 6 1/2 hours. Haven't bought it to sit and watch back post rides but as an opportunity to have some sort of evidence if required . Has several safety features that capture footage if bike is tipped over and front light incorporates a very noisy and light flashing alarm if tampered with whilst bike is stood ie coffee stop . They are pricey but there was a deal on when I purchased which knocked off £115 if both bought together. Bearing in mind rear light costs £119 it seemed a good bargain. PS Lights are very effective as well

My daughter gifted me a Vivitar DVR 944hd a cheapo which kind of looks the part and claims to do what it says on the tin. Been out of the box but as yet not been out on the road. I doesn't necessarily have to be fitted to helmet there's a bracket for handlebars etc., See quite a few folks with them fitted, perhaps if they are noticed by the other road users they will act responsibly. I have to say though; recently I'm finding the majority of folks giving me a wee bit more room as they pass. I believe in many respects they are a very good idea!

I had a cheap yi sports camera (£80, like go pro) on the front of the bike. It rattled a bit but did the job. I tried it on the helmet but the weight cause annoying helmet rock.
Then I got rear ended twice in 2 weeks in January at low speed by car drivers with children passengers. In both cases the drivers were really shocked at their carelessness and apologised so I didn't follow up. After that, I mounted the camera on the back of the bike.
I'm considering getting another for the front as I had a pedestrian step out infront of me and a bus (!) looking the wrong way on a 3 lane one way system. I couldn't move much or I would go under the bus and I was doing about 26mph so no chance of stopping in time. I yelled and despite having headphones in, she heard and froze and I was able to avoid her. It's a bit sad but had we collided, I feel like we both would have been seriously hurt and video evidence would help clarify things.
I think camera are (sadly) essential is you commute through cities. (My commute is 26 miles a day though London zones 1 - 5)
With the rear camera, drivers do seem to behave a bit better. However, watching the footage back was scary at first because some drivers get extremely close. These days I don't watch the footage unless something of note happens
