Hi,
I'll shortly be buying a Decathlon bike but suddenly find myself totally torn between road and mountain. I used to do a lot of mountain biking when I lived in Wales and the West Country but have now been in London for a few years and have been thinking about switching to road. The Ultra 700af especially caught my eye. It seemed like a clear choice until a week or so ago when I started watching a few mountain bike videos and started thinking to myself 'god, I miss this'. Now I've started looking at things like the Rockrider 560 and find myself absolutely torn. Anyone else been in a similar situation? One or two have said hybrid but that wouldn't be any good for the type of off roading I'd want to do.

The price of the Ultra is amazingly cheap, get excellent reviews and will sell out soon. I have been tempted to buy one myself despite having a garage full of bikes.
Road or offroad? That is for you to decide. Are there a lot of mountains in London? You will probably have to travel a fair distance to match the Welsh experience. Do you want to ride on a daily basis? Are you planning to ride with friends?

As an individual purchase of either, both good options as you have clearly seen for yourself!
Regards mountain bike or road bike, I faced a similar indecision back in July. Except I had a mountain bike and didn't know whether to go hybrid or road bike. I looked at the hybrids out there and found the closest value to Decathlon from the Chris Boardman range but it still wasn't nearly as good spec for spec as the decathlon road bike I bought (Triban 540). That was so cheap I was able to hold on to my mountain bike but it didn't stop me exploring hybrid options further and I am impressed with what giant have to offer that may fair better in London than an out and out mountain bike. The upshot from my further window shopping was that I still sold the mountain bike and went for the Giant Tough Road SLR ! to accompany the Trban. Now I haven't lost sight that you are looking for one or the other but as I later found out the Giant bikes are worth checking out. They also have Cycle cross options, any road and fast road models that will conjure images of riding more rugged terrain than where a road bike likes go and handle tarmac way more efficiently than a mountain bike. I'd hate to say anything against Decathlon but there are (In my opinion) hybrids out there that will serve your needs without being rubbish at either just so long as you are not taking things to total road racing or stump jumping so to speak. Have fun looking and choosing I bet sales are springing up all over the place.

Got a feeling I'll end up buying road and mountain... just a case of which first. The 700af is slightly irritating in a way. Had originally been looking at Triban 520 which is obviously considerably cheaper but the quality of the former is difficult to ignore even if it is pushing the budget. In terms of mountain biking in London, there are some nearby places like Epping and Hainault forests both of which are less than an hour from where I live. I also still visit Wales and Devon quite often so a mountain bike would get holiday use too.
