I'm looking at both of these bikes at the moment after seeing good reviews in terms of 'punching their weight above their price'. I've never bought a road bike before. Always been into mountain biking, but am tempted by a road one since moving to London. I'll probably use it for two or three hour rides around the city and the occasional holiday trip to more hilly areas like Wales and the West Country. The 520 would be pushing it financially for me but I'd consider busting the budget it if someone tells me its a 100% better than the 500SE. Maybe as a newbie to road biking I wouldn't notice any of the limitations that reviews of the 500SE mention. I guess some of the reviewers for magazines are likely to be a bit pickier in terms of things I might not notice.

520 frame gives more clearance for mudguards and wider tyres so if you were looking to use over winter this would be a benefit and something that can't be upgraded. Otherwise not really much difference imo with the groupsets or wheels especially for a beginner. If you get more into road cycling these can easily be upgraded later.

Id definitely go 520 if its an option, william39 mentions that clearance... that might be a real issue if you get into it... it certainly limits the effectiveness of the 500se as a winter bike - I make do, but I'd be much happier with the 520's frame.

Triban 520 down to Β£400 now. Decisions, decisions. Just wondering as a road bike newbie how much I'd notice the difference.
