Hi! Please can someone advise me which is the better bike for my son for Christmas? Haven't a clue about bikes! thanks I think one of the differences is that the 500SE has a carbon-fibre fork (the pronged part that holds the front wheel). Carbon-fibre is lighter and flexes slightly more than aluminium or steel which makes for less road vibrations being felt in the arms and elbows etc (apparently). I've only just bought my 500SE myself (a few weeks ago) but am very happy with my purchase!

I agree, if you can afford it, the 500SE seems a very worthwhile upgrade on the 500.
Also, I would encourage him to try the bikes out for size before getting one. Getting the right size and feeling comfortable on the bike are key to him getting the most out of it. If you aren't anywhere near a Decathlon or want it to be a surprise, let people here know how tall he is and they'll be able to advise on the right frame size.

The right size and comfort is important. If I'd gone off the sizing charts (which use inside leg measurement to predict the correct frame size for you), I would have had a 54cm bike. Having sat on one, I knew it was too small. Turns out I have long arms for my height (186cm armspan vs 177cm height) so I was better off getting a bike slightly bigger (57cm). So definitely get him sat on a bike if you can!
