I converted my 500se to a flat bar with Claris shifters and front derailleur for leisure riding with the wife this summer. Had quite a few comments from people who would like a similar fast bike without drops.

Decathlon must have picked up the same in their market research as the 500, 520 and 540 all come in flat bar versions as well as full on entry level road machines. Just noticed new version of the 540 (with drops) in red with a dark blue front to end. www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-540-road-bike-105-red-blue-id_8364452.html

Hi Mike, Don't know if you are still posting but I'm interested in doing the same as you in converting my 500se to a hybrid flat bar bike. I just wondered if you needed to change your front derailleur I would have thought that the original Sora derailleur would still work with new shifters. Tony ps MY Sora is a nine speed so I would get a nine speed flatbar shifters/brakes

Hi Tony, yes keep your front derailleur and just fit 9 speed shifters really easy to do and I didnt even have to adjust the limit screws. Only reason I put on a Claris FD was the Microshift one wasn't very good. Make sure you get triple shifters if you have a triple chainring! I'm still riding this bike a lot, but I fitted Halo locking skewers to deter wheel thieves, and I reckon the brakes are more powerful with the flat shifters too. Good luck.
