Are the plastic frame mounted mudguards (that attach with the tie wrap things) any good for stopping the spray from the front wheel getting onto your feet/legs? My winter bike does not have mudguard eyes on the front forks. I have one of the plastic ones that attaches to the seat post and that is good for stopping the spray getting on the back as the guard hangs close to the rear tyre. I can imagine the front version would not be as good due to not been as close to the tyre. Does anybody have these fitted to the front and if any good which make is it?
Cheers

I had one long ago, and it was just fine, as long as you never turned the slightest of corner!
crud catcher roadracers work a charm and don't use the eyes.

I have one on my mountain bike. It's ok-ish, but doesn't keep your feet clean as it's rarely in the firing line between wheel and foot.

To keep my feet dry I combine using Crud catcher mudguards and wearing a pair of Velotoze (or sometimes heavier) shoe covers.
People berate the Cruds, but I think the back ones are good as they stop water being shot up the back of your legs and all around the front mech. Still, each to their own.

I've had a low opinion of Cruds since a mate had some of the early ones which were very flimsy and kept rubbing. Went to the bike show last week though and saw the mk3s which felt much more sturdy. The Velcro fastening looked good for wide forks maybe not for thin seatstays.

Hi all,
Sorry to jump in on this post. I have recently bought a Triban 500SE and am really enjoying it as my commuter. Just a quick question, with winter approaching and the want / need to stay dry. I have been looking at the Crud Roadracer Mk2. Are these the only mudguard that will fit the 500SE?
Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance I am not sure if the Mk2s are still available but they certainly fit my T3 with minimal clearance on 23mm tyres. I think the frame is similar to the 500. The Mk3 version is now on sale and, as chas says, it looks a sturdier design.

Looked at the mk3 with interest. Look great apart for the rear is very short. Would keep water off your bum, but rider behind would be soaked.

Thanks for the help, I can get a pair of Crud Roadracer Mk2's pretty cheap, but I have Β£20 credit with Decathlon so may try Bluemels Road Bike Mudguard Set - 42mm as I think that's what the link to the other post was saying. Definitely worth a try.

No sorry for the confusion, you may get the 35mm to fit using an alternative to the rear plastic bridge mount but I think the 42mm would be a bit wide for the 500, if you could get them on they'd just look wrong. The Giant ones would probably be the most straightforeward but I've never fitted them myself, I think erictherat has some?

Do you really want me to start my mudguard rant? - ive had a bad day in that regard. The giant ones just broke at the bridge. just got a friend to replace rivets. previously patched and nursed a pair of blumells for about 6 moths till they teminally broke. i dont entirly blame the guards tho. i run effective 28mm tyres so they end up being so tensioned to fit, and clearance is so tight they get battered with caught stones and the like - I ride a lot on poor surfaces like canal paths etc.. am thinking (one stage on from dreaming)of new bike giant was the best ive had. - fine with 25mm.

Ah thanks, I will have a look around today and see if I can find some of the giant ones pretty cheaply.

Thanks mate! Hopefully I can learn from your issues. Might end up sticking with getting wet!
