On odd one, unless you've had anything similar I suppose.
Has anyone here had any experience of having a cyst removed or drained? I know it's disgusting (we've all seen those videos on YouTube/Facebook etc). Thankfully this is at the centre of my lower neck/spine so I personally won't have to see any of the gruesome gunk. Apparently it stinks of rotten cheese though?!
I've had it for about five years at the top end of my neck. It's probably about the size of the tip of a thumb print but it's quite elevated from the skin. It's about an inch below were your collar would sit on a round neck t-shirt. I had it checked out about four years ago so I know it's nothing sinister. I'm just fed up of it and it's abit cosmetically ugly when you take off your top.
My question is, I'm likely to have it removed via a 'minor local anasthetic surgery'. How long is this likely to keep me off the bike?
As it's in an area that requires a lot of movement, checking over shoulder for example I imagine it would be wise to not jump straight back on the bike but the doctor reckons it'll be healed really quickly.

Unsure if the procedure is the same but i had an abscess sorted many moons ago. This was in a very sensitive area (anus). It was drained then had to be re-packed daily for quite a while the first few days were torture. In my case riding the bike was never an option.
However if as you say your doctor thinks itβll be okay, donβt think you have much to worry about day or two off the bike isn't going to knock you back much with regards to fitness.

Hell, that sounds horrendous! That must have been really painful. I hate anything medical and this really isn't my cup of tea. Watching those popping/slicing videos on the internet turns my stomach so the thought of me having to have something like that turns me into a wuss. I wish I'd never seen them.

A friend of mine has a cyst removed from the front of his neck, it was approximately where the top of a shirt collar would fit on your neck. He had it removed because it used to rub on clothes and bleed. It also went bright red and not very pretty as the skin healed but then subsequently thinned over the lump.
After removal under local anaesthetic he was told to lay off the exercise, which for him is swimming and running, for approx 4 weeks to ensure the skin knitted back together properly and the stitches stayed put. It would probably be the same sort of time for you but your doctor would give you a definitive answer.

I used to work with a girl who had a rather large cyst on her jawline. Someone banged into her in a nightclub and it burst. Hope you aren't eating your lunch as you read this.

Thanks guys. Four weeks is along time! I'll be hoping it's not that long. Even though it's uncomfortable I don't think I'd want to lose four weeks of riding this summer. If I'm fortunate enough to have the choice I'll put it off until the depths of winter. Having said that the initial inspection to doc did said he thought it'd be a really quick procedure and the heal time would be minimal. beatnik69 nothing to do with cysts surprises me anymore, I've seen too many of those vile videos of Facebook. I really wish I could unseen them as the thought of that happened to me turns my stomach

I had a massive mucocele come up on my bottom lip late last year. I had to have it cut out and my lip stitched back up. I was off the bike for several hours.

Hopefully my prognosis turns out more like Paulinblack . Trip to the doctors tomorrow to see how long it could be until they take the beast out. If the docs say there is a huge NHS wait list I will see if my employers private medical insurance will cover it. I might need to fork out an excess but it could be worth it. I don't fancy going on my summers holidays and taking my top off on the beach or by the pool only to show a huge alien implant lump on my neck.

As a little, well big update my doctors appointment was delayed until Moday next week. However, my cyst seemed to reach a head this week, abit like a teenage spot but at 39 I should be past that really. Oh, firstly, apologies for anyone eating whilst they read this.
A beer or two for Dutch courage saw me take a poke and a scratch at the head and we were away. At first it was like a normal spot, a touch of whitish blood but then the flood gates opened. I'm not exagerating to say I was there for 15/20 minutes once I found the squeezing sweet spot. It was literally non stop gunk after that. I was quite gentle as I didn't want to be like those YouTube videos. Boy it smelt really bad and I'm left with what look like a hole in my neck and a black dot. If I give it a squeeze now it feels like there is a little pocket of air but thankfully the gunk appears to be out.
Next steps are a quick bath for cleanliness, a good dashing of savlon antiseptic and get it covered to avoid infection. Fingers crossed this might just have worked.
Again, apologies for anyone who was hungry.

Yikes. It sounds revolting but I just know if it was my neck I'd have enjoyed every second. Yes I'm a scab picker.
