V. interesting well written article: Sabotage and hatred: what have people got against cyclists? t.co/NjTJXhMXgI #cycling #prejudice Idiots taking things to a whole new level. Really interesting social analysis, some telling facts and good quotes from Chris Boardman. Highly recommended read.

I visited Copenhagen over the weekend. Apparently it has just overtaken Amsterdam as the most bike friendly capital in the world. I can confirm that there are hundreds of bikes, miles of dedicated bike lanes, and lots of happy cyclists. I would go so far as to say this Country is one of the least cyclist friendly countries in Europe presently.

Having recently returned from Spain and back on to the UK shambolic highways/byways I find it rather sad. It's taken these other countries many years to get the separation and sensibility sorted, doubt very much I'll see much change on our roads in my lifetime. I'm grateful and very fortunate that I can choose when I take my bike out, miss out on rush hour etc., unfortunately not everyone has that benefit.

I've got mixed views on bike lanes. Whilst good for the leisure rider they can cause problems for those wanting to get on with it.

On the outskirts of Copenhagen there were quite a few 'proper' cyclists 'getting on with it' didn't seem to be a problem.

On the outskirts of Copenhagen there were quite a few 'proper' cyclists 'getting on with it' didn't seem to be a problem. Gonna have one more bite of this apple. There are very few designated cycle paths in my area, those that do exist are neither adequate or maintained, basically a dash of paint on the side of the road. Normally I cycle daily, as I mentioned before I do however have the luxury of choosing both my time of departure and route. For the most part I encounter (through choice) very little heavy traffic. Of course there is always one or three folks in a hurry, not just those in motor vehicles, I've also encountered a good number of pedestrians who believe that cyclist have magical powers when it comes to braking! On a few occasions I've 'quietly' reminded them we don't!!! Realistically the Β£'s that are put out are sadly never going to be enough to embrace all travelers safety. My two worst incidents involved no other person or vehicle, proving perhaps I can be my own worst enemy. I like to believe i'm kind and considerate in all my travels on the tar mac regardless of how many wheels are on my wagon. Then again for a 'true assessment, my better half may be the best person to ask... Today I hope we can all start and end our journeys with a smile and stay safe.

The cycle lane thingy is a difficult one of course. If only they were reliable! Round here, they are rarely maintained, and have the usual debris, farm gate entrances complete with loose gravel, and hawthorn clippings at this time of year. My OH is more than a little traffic-nervous and uses cycle lanes when available -- but then curses like mad as most of them are shared use with pedestrians.... which is fine... sort of .... try telling the big geezer with headphones in both ears who is walking along in the middle of the lane that you're trying to get past. Same applies to the pair of young mums taking up the whole space having a gossip. While they're quite within their rights, it doesn't help!
