any recommendations on cycling gloves. i have 2 pairs but thinking of looking at something with gel padding if available. the reason is i have previously broken both collar bones and have snapped my radius and ulna on my left arm twice. so my left arm mechanics are slightly out of whack. This has been a discomfort on my left elbow since i have started cycling and im constantly shifting bar position to minimise the discomfort. is gloves the answer? is my core still a bit weak? is it a sign of a bad fitting bike? - my back/hips/all other joints are fine over a 3 , 4 or occasional 5 hour ride - even my original btwin saddle gives me no discomfort to my barse. so another daft question by me but i will be appreciative of any of you more experienced cyclists advice for my longterm comfort and enjoyment of cycling. ta

What position minimises the discomfort? Or is it just the change in position that eases it up?

You can try the gloves that Aldi or Lidl sell as they usually have gel pads and for a small outlay you can give them a go and see if you then want to invest in a more expensive pair.

Not surprising your experiencing a bit of discomfort considering all the broken bones rob. The gloves would offer some help i'm sure. Though I think it maybe a good idea to have a look at your position on the bars, a wee tweak adjustment in height or reach would be another recommendation. 3 to 5 hours is quite a time on the bike it's for sure not just a ride around the block. Hope you find the solution soon, don't want to miss out on all this good weather!

about an hour into the journey i feel the left elbow discomfort to the point i ride with my right hand and have to flex my left arm and just keep shifting bar positions trying not to lock out my arms. i try to consciously keep a slight bend in arms but the triceps can start to burn, was curious if experienced riders feel anything similar on their wrists or anything? and have common explanations? as i say the rest of my body seems to soak up the road vibrations and for a guy who has suffered multiple breaks and injuries its only the left elbow and sometimes palms of my hands that get a bit of a aoreness.
ill see if my local aldi or lidl have anything when im in thanks and i might try moving from a 23 to a 25 mm tyre as my rear tyre is starting to look flat and chipped anyway-- will this make a difference?

25mm good idea rob, I switched a while ago, never looked back, definitely help in the comfort zone. I also run with my tires well inflated but not to the max. Some of the roads are pretty grim around here so every little helps.

I used to think gloves for winter - fine, but not needed when the weather's okay. However, after one of my longer rides I had bad pains on the edge of my wrist/palm and thumb area. Like you I thought it could be bad posture/bike fit or just how I was gripping the bars. Easiest solution to try was to get some gel padded mitts. As ChrisD mentions the Aldi ones are fine at only Β£3.49 (I got the blue/black ones to match my 500se colour scheme.)
I've not had any problems since I started wearing them and now they're an essential part of my kit and I won't leave for a ride without them. As @robert mentions gloves may help you but for elbow pain bar positioning is probably more critical especially after all your broken bones! Failing that a quick squirt of WD40 should do the trick - I've not heard from my creaking knee for a while.

If you are locking out your arms, you probably need a shorter stem, locked elbows will really jar up the arms.

The best winter gloves I have are from Decathlon they are only Β£5.99 at the moment very warm and wind proof, My best summer gloves I got from Wiggle GripGrab ProGel they fit my hands nice but with gloves what one person likes someone will hate.

@robster1979 from the pics of your bike in the build thread I would rotate the bars towards you slightly. If you check out some pics of the other bikes on here you will see what I mean.

ok thanks everyone, I got out tonight after work , gonna try a bit of everything here but started by twisting my bars up as suggested by william39 and its now seeming easier to crouch over with slight bend in my elbows and I feel no pain after a 90 min blast through rough roads at a decent pace . im gonna invest in some new gloves give 25mm tyres a try and over time try concentrate on my pedalling to include more hamstring and calf muscle as I feel im hammering my quads mostly but maybey that's because im pushing myself. the more outings I hope ill gain more experience to plan and reserve for a longer ride as im pretty wrecked after most runs oh and the belly doesn't help I suppose but im working on my overall fitness
thanks for everyones input
