Hi, the standard Microshift rear derailleur on the Triban 3a is a long arm one (very as far as what I can see). If this is swapped to a shorter arm one i.e. Sora (short or medium) will any links need taking out of the chain to take up any slack and stop the chain bouncing about and potentially onto the smaller chain ring on the chain set with the derailleur arm been shorter?

Are you running a triple on the front? if so you should stick with a long cage derailleur.
Chain length you wrap around big/big (don't run through the rear D for this) then add two links. thats a good rule of thumb.

Will be keeping the triple so will opt for the longer cage one, cheers for the advice.

The current Sora 'short' and 'medium' are both long compared to older mechs, the 'short' works fine with a triple.

I went the 2 x 10 gear route with a compact crank 34/50 and a 11-25 cassette + short cage I started with small/small plus through derallieur routing and pulled a bit of tension on derailleur and used a bit of bent welding rod to join the chain to see what excess chain was hanging. with routing moved to big/big and still through derailleur ( chain still hooked with wire - make sure rear derailleur isn't maxxed out then you know you have a good range to cut chain where reqd to do away with the wire used to hold chain together.
