I have a problem it seems. Out of six 100+ mile rides, on 4 occasions I have had a recurring issue. At a certain point in each ride my stomach has given me some not very nice signs which then translates in to real cramps and a lot of frantic searching for a bathroom (or more likely a farm gate to scale). You get the picture.
On each occasion I am beyond 60 miles. A fortnight ago it was 10 miles after a cafe stop after I had eaten a small fry. I had assumed my body had a wtf moment due to grease intake during exercise. Yesterday it was at the 100 mile mark. I had pit stopped at 92 miles and taken on some water. Almost immediately after taking off again I could feel the stomach problems. Up to that point I had a few eggs and weetabix for breakfast, a small beef salad for lunch, a banana and a flapjack. Only drank water. Nothing bonkers I felt.
Before that on another occasion I had tried some hi5 tabs for the first time so had assumed these were the culprit.
Any ideas. I am thinking the issue is more to do with what I am NOT taking as opposed to something I am taking but I am no dietician.

When did you last sterilise your bidons?

When did you last sterilise your bidons? I do so regularly and replace them every few months. Plus I use the same bidons on short rides as well with no issues during or after the ride. The problem seems exclusive to anything 5 hours and abvove.

Maybe going into fat burning mode.
It happens to me quite often on big rides and mild tummy aches are a good indication to me that I've kicked into a fat burner.

Yes mate.
I quite often go out unfuelled to burn some fat off and I have come to recognise the onset of a mild tummy ache as the switch over point.
It doesn't do me any harm at all and I just get on with it. I like to think I have become quite efficient at burning fat especially on long tours when intake doesn't equate to output.

I have next to no fat to burn either which perhaps isn't helping. I shall keep an eye on it but it does sound plausible as it only occurs on the long rides. Anything 3 hours and below is no issue.

you will be surprised at just how much fat you have stored. a healthy lean person has about 100,000 calories worth of fat stores. we only have about 600 calories of liver sugar stores. Which is why people bonk.
I suspect it maybe your body dumping excess liberated fat in to your bowels(your liver filtering it out in to your gall bladder which is contracting in to your bowls). so you get once big dump of the stuff and your bowls cant deal with it. (like Dave said)
just a guess. I am on a low carb diet and I know people can get this at the beginning.

Could you possibly be drinking too much water? I find that if I drink too much water I get a sore stomach.

80 miles today with no on course issues. I did eat more than I usually would and felt well fuelled. Tummy became upset when I returned home but thankfully no more than that.
