It would seem I'm guilty. Reached a performance level where I couldn't get my heart rate above a certain point. Had 3 days off from cycling whilst working on my car and stuff then back out today and for the same perceived effort my heart rate was right back up there with more power too. I think these hills are the cause so it's time the A580 to Haydock got some flatwork instead. Question is.... How much is too much? I will be paying more attention to my heart rate to spot when I'm off the boil in future.

Difficult to say how much is too much Roy, horses for courses and all that. There is lots of text written about training blocks of x number of weeks followed by a weeks light exercise to rebuilt, recharge and recuperate. I'm working on 4 weeks on then an easy week (which happens to be this week). I've done one session on the turbo, swam a few times and been on 2 short runs. My legs feel brill with no aches or pains (they will get a good thrashing today as I'm in a 10k running race later this morning).

I'm fairly sre I did a few weeks back, I was just down on power over a range of times. But rather than stop willingly I got ill, real ill, 10 days off the bike and now I'm back to where I was. I could have been coming down with the flu, but I don't think I was, and I'd done a LOT of intense cycling in the previous few weeks..

A lot of intense cycling. You mean like 85,000 feet of climbing in February?

I'm fairly convinced I caught a cold the week before last, might call it over training to be down with the kids .

Rocket not been doing the hills you do, partly geography, partly time. But I've done a fair amount of 24mph flat riding and sprinting on the velodrome with another race session.

I think at some point there is a need to back off a little and recuperate. Winter is an ideal time to ease off a wee bit especially with the state of the roads and the weather conditions.
I'm not saying do very little. Just to ease off slightly and chill a bit. Once Spring kicks in, it's like Linford Christie out of the starting blocks. Whoosh..!!
