Hi guys, I think I've pretty much decided to get this bike: www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-500-s ... 06187.html I'll get the raceblade mud guards and pannier I am keen to get a puncture resistant tyre though as I'll be using it for commuting (happy top sacrifice speed for comfort). Can I get these? www.amazon.co.uk/Schwalbe-Marath ... B00JR9WNKU I'm a bit confused about the sizing- does 700c x 25c mean they're 25mm wide? Thanks, Chris.

The c figure does indeed refer to the width. Try your luck with the stock tyres to start with. They come with the bike at no extra cost and you might find the up to the task. If not then buy something else if and when necessary.

Thanks germcevoy, I was planning to do that anyway but I'm just trying to plan ahead in case I do need and the Marathon pluses seem to be really good for puncture resistance. Would any tyres be compatible or is there a maximum? The stock ones seem to be 23mm but would any 25mm be OK also? I can't work out the rim width, which I imagine is important in determining tyre compatibility.
Chris.

You may need to fiddle with your mudguards a bit to prevent any rubbing that may occur due to reduced clearance. I never punctured once on the tyres that came with my Red T3. They weren't massively grippy but they were as tough as old boots. No harm in having a backup set of tyres though.

Thanks germcevoy, that's good to know. Can't wait to get the triban- currently commuting on a battered rubbishy mountain bike :-)

Marathon plus 25mm tyres fits the Triban 500Se, however they don't leave any room under the brakes to fit the raceblades.

Thanks for your replies guys. I've actually ordered the Fit 300 as that just came back in stock in my size. I'll see how I go with the stock tyres and then it sounds like I should be able to have 25's fitted if needed.
Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris, I've got standard Hutchinson equinox 2s on stock wheels and Continental gatorskins on Fulcrum 7s, both are 23 c and I have them fitted to a Triban 500 sora equipped bike with Crudcatcher mk 2 mudguards, the stock wheels have been used through winter for about 1200 miles and the only p####ure I've had were down to me kerbing the back wheel when on a cycle path at speed crossing a junction with an offset of about 3 metres hidden by a few trees ( I could see the road was clear ), lack of experience on my behalf. The stock tyres have a few nicks in them mainly on the back so I've just swapped them about to even out the wear. The gatorskins have only done 300 miles with 1 p###ure due possibly to a thorn or maybe a nail as I was passing a diy superstore 20 miles after fitting them.

Thanks Fearless. It certainly sounds like the stock tyres are a lot better than I've given them credit for from what people are saying on here. Would the 25s potentially give a more comfortable ride? I'm just going by what other people have said really- this is my first road bike as I've only had mountain bikes before.
Chris.

With the marathon plus 25mm I'm not constantly trying to dodge bits of glass, so in that way they are more comfortable.

That may be enough for me to get them in the end :-)

Just put a set of 700x28c Vittoria randonneur Trekking/touring tyres on my Triban 500 (the orange one with steel forks Β£250. 30tpi double shielding. THe tyres got great reviews, hoping to go tour up to inverness from Glasgow before the weather turns too grotty.
I'd say there was about 4/5 mm clearance, hopefully will take the odd poly bag getting blown in to it.
There's no room for mudcards but I have a bontrager pannier that has kind of mud gard built in so I'm not worried about getting a muddy line up my back. I've been out to some gravel paths ( 1cm to 5cm crushed rocks over a nice flat dirt road) using the 700 Btwin Aero spoke wheels with some 23 tyres Hutchinson equinox 2's, really seemingly obvious bad idea, but i like to know for sure, the tyres side walls are obviously not made for this, and I soon tore a little hole in the side wall with a 20 pound pannier on the back hitting a little dink in the road with some sharp rocks in, someones gotta find out... The pressure would have been 100psi, not much give. The second flat was because I fixed the flat without a pressure gage resulting in a snakebite pinchflat, after hitting another dink...
That said the wheels have held true even after a 6 mile walk over questionable roads with a floppy flat tyre on it , though definitely changing the back wheel for a 36 spoke. They are cheap, easy to true and strong enough to handle the actual roads I'll tour on. I don't plan on having extra weight on the front apart from a liter bottle on the front downtube so I've kept the aero spoke wheel on, its seems stronger than the stock wheels that come with the bike, in the sense it's staying true and I've had it for far longer.
So aye, 700x28c Vittoria randonneur Trekking/touring tyres will fit the triban 500. I'll let you know if its 4/5mm of of clearance is a problem, but Touring isnt about bombing down hills at 40mph so I'm going with it.
Good luck

What rim widths are people using for 28mm tyres?
